Evening all hope you all had a great New Years.

I have been busy making my own Beauty Dish using an alloy mixing bowl i bought from a shop :) it's 24cm, i have been taking a few prctice shots of some ornaments and find it is a little hot in places. Is this normal?

Also what is the best to use inside the bowl white or silver alloy?

Thanks Guys

Edit: Added some pics

Interesting results, but as you say, there are definite hotspots or rings.
I personally find white to be far better, particularly for people etc. It's no where near as harsh as silver. I think you may have a problem getting the light even enough for portraiture if i were to be honest.
Having said that, a diffusion panel across the front would sort it, and therefore give you a perfectly round softbox. Great for the eye catchlights!

A little under exposed and didnt have my reflector to lighten the back side of the shot but the lighting looks much smoother and even what do you think?

Is there anything else laying around the house you can use as a diffuser? Haven't got a shower bath only so thats out

TBH that light doesn't look much like the light from a beauty dish, and 'curing' the problem by putting a diffuser over it is really just turning it into a softbox...

Can you post a photo of the actual beauty dish?

erm...... I meant buying a shower curtain. I think your wife would kill you if you ended up robbing it from the bathroom. :rules:

I'm putting money on it being one of those ultra reflective chrome finish jobs with steep walls and possibly some visible "machining" finish, giving it that circular hotspot characteristic :D

or I could be a million miles out :bonk:

Couldn't find a flatter one, atleast i try :'(

I did wonder if the central plate was a bit large, it is much larger than the ones i have looked at on google images, but it was the base of a fruit cake to did the job nice at the time lmao

Sorry, but my 'solution' is to throw it away or mod it heavily:)

It's entirely the wrong shape for a beauty dish. That central deflector is far too large too, and that mirror-like surface is adding to the problems. Spraying it white will be a big help, but it doesn't solve the problem of it being the wrong shape.

Incidentally, white is neither better nor worse than silver, it's just that the light from a white beauty dish (of the right design) produces a softer light which is more forgiving of models who don't have perfect skin or perfect makeup.

Always worth a try, best way to learn.
It'd still work as an effective "softbox" with the diffusion panel though, and you now know how the walls of the bowl have quite dramatically effected the light, and what to look for in your new project :)

Good first effort

Think i might turn in into a softbox lol seems a shame to waste it :/

I was looking for the right shaped bowl but couldn't find anything close (except a light shade)

Anyone got any suggestions?

I have seen people using an old cd for the middle.:)

Gave up on it for now until i can find a better shaped and much larger bowl lol

I did put a diffusion panel across the front this evening, got a few nice shots of the step son on his mums laptop
