Beauty Dish - Studio vs Location

Morning all,

I was shooting in a studio this weekend and shot nearly all my pictures with a Bowens Beauty Dish, and absolutely loved the look of the lighting.

I just wondered if anyone had shot a beauty dish on location and if it gives the same "look" as it does in a studio?

I've done it many times. It can produce exactly the same look outdoors as in, provided that you have the same control of the lighting - i.e., if your flash isn't powerful enough to overpower the ambient light, then the light from the beauty dish (or anything else) will simply add to the existing light so you won't get much effect from it.

In a studio a beauty dish is normally used on a boom arm - allows you to get the right angle onto the subject.

Transporting and using a boom in location can be a faff.
