Hi all

I mostly photograph solo models, but occasionally photograph events (Proms etc) and sometimes family groups.

I have 70cm & 40cm beauty dishes (silver and white respectively) complete with grids and diffusers.

I have a large (150cm?) Octabox

I've just won two new gridded strip boxes on eBay at an irresistable price. I thought I'd keep one and sell the other and not be too out of pocket. I thought one would be fine for full-body lighting and occasional lighting from above / gradient background lighting.

I then saw a load of nice shots using twin strip boxes and I'm considering holding on to both of them! :thinking:

I ought to offload at least something against the cost of the new boxes - do you think I could get away with a diffused 70cm grid for family shots / prom group shots and sell the octabox? I guess it would work ok, but I've never tried as I had the octabox handy!

If you're asking about a 70cm beauty dish with honeycomb and diffuser then no, personally I wouldn't be likely to use that for family or prom group shots - far too harsh, and then some - but without the honeycomb and with the diffuser fitted, it basically turns into a 70cm softbox, which is a bit small but you may like hard lighting.

I use two softboxes with honeycombs quite often, for rim lighting, and two used together can work pretty well as in this (nude) shot. But the honeycombs need to be properly made and designed, otherwise you'll get lens flare at acute angles, and the ones that I've personally seen sold on Ebay have been useless.

Can I sway you to sell the white 70cm BD :) was looking at ordering one today lol :P.

Did you get the 2 strips for around £200 I think i saw that auction on there from purestorm.

They were a bit more than that! I don't have a white 70cm BD and I'm not selling my silver one! It's the 40cm that is white.

Would never have spotted it if you hadn't said, but a little pp to extend the shadow would hide that.
Lovely lighting on that shot.

The Devil's in the detail, and as you've said, ideal for a spot of pp ;)
