Hey,

I've decided to get myself a beauty dish for my flash guns, currently the only other light modifier I have is the 24" soft box which I use quite comfortably.

I was thinking something like this, as it looks to be a decent price, bearing in mind I'll also need to buy materials to construct something to attach my flash(es) in the back.

I know there is the 30cm Interfit one built specifically for flash guns, but I'm not sure if that will be big enough for me?

Has anyone tried using a flash in a larger beauty dish? It looks to me like they suck in quite a lot of light, especially the bigger ones, is there some sort of limit of size I should go up to before one strobe just can't light it all up?

Also it seems like all of the cheaper ones come with the silver coating inside as opposed to white, am I right in thinking that the silver gives off harsher light as opposed to the soft and more appealing white finishing?

Thank you for any help!

Do you know how heavy it is? It doesn't strike me as something terribly easy to adapt to fit on a flashgun.

Having said that, I bought a smaller one that was actually designed to fit on a flashgun and as a beauty dish, it was rubbish

I have a beauty dish from eBay, it's fine with a speedlite. Mine has an s type fitting so it swaps from the interfit xs bracket straight onto the studio head. It even came with a grid for more control.

The bracket type fitting I'll be buying/making will take the entire weight off the flash gun and directly onto itself/the light stand.

.. however carrying it around from location to location might cause issues! But that's a price I have to pay. :D

.. doh I thought I posted this in lighting, my bad.

I have a couple of these Speedlite to Speedring adapters....

.... which allow me to fit all sorts of standard studio modifiers to my Speedlites, including an Elemental 55cm beauty dish, softboxes, octaboxes, barn doors with grid and gels.

That's the sort of thing I'm after. :)

Can two large flash guns (YN-560) physically fit through an S-type fitting or is the hole too small?

I have the interfit version of that bracket and it fits canon's 580 and 430 guns fine, even the nissin 866 goes in ok.

and for a light-weight, portable beauty-dish option there is this:

Although it's a little smaller than I'm looking for, it looks like a decent option - only it's only available in the states!

Ideally what I'm after is a dish no smaller than 40cm and costing no more than £80 including the bracket. Just can't seem to find anything for that sort of price range, most 40cm beauty dishes seem to be around £50 to £60 and the brackets around £30 to £40.

I think I might just make one out of a salad bowl.

I've seen these on eBay from time to time. You could drop the company a line as they seem to be a small operation and so likely to be flexible over postage.

Thinking of picking one up later in the year as I'm off to live in California for a few months.

I think I am tempted to just pick that one up actually. A little over budget but no fuss required.

However I'm a little concerned as to how deep the dish is. Does anyone know how much the depth of the dish effects the light coming out? Most dishes I've seen seem to be quite shallow compared to that..

They do seem to be a very strange shape, and there's no need for them to be that deep, but it should work OK. The only downside is likely to be that you'll get an even sharper cutoff of light, but there's always a sharp cutoff anyway and it isn't a problem.

Well I was looking for one for quite a long time, interfit or lastolite. However I went on a Damian McGillicuddy whorshop and saw his own lighting brand which has just won speedlite best beauty dish modifier. it's designed by damian for his one work and how sells

I wonder why that page shows six similar pictures of the rear of the dish but not one of the front or the internal design. From those views it's hard to see how it differs from an octabox with internal baffle. What about a grid? I don't see that mentioned. Not cheap, is it? Who awarded it "speedlite best beauty dish modifier"?

Ram, I cant see where anyone has mentioned Damien's photography skills, awards or reputation?

The comments have been as a result of seeing the "beauty dish" quite frankly its an octabox softbox not a beauty dish, and they prices are certainly in my opinion high for what the products are.

I can see where the op asked for a beauty dish with flash adapter for a budget of £80 max.

+1. People openly laugh at the Fong Dong too without even feeling the need to check Gary Fong's work.

I will find out the exact award it was but heres a more complex review

Thanks for posting that link. It shows the front of the dish which is exactly what people were hoping to find on the selling page. This is far more interesting than shots of the flashguns you can fit it to.

When this dish came out I was very interested in it because anybody who has travelled with a large beauty dish has dreamed of a folding one. But despite the high cost I haven't seen much that sets this apart from a similar sized folding softbox. But he gets results with it - I'm just not sure that buying it would allow me to do the same.

Might be worth looking at Focus. There was a company last year selling all sorts of lighting stuff like this, rectangular softboxes etc quite cheaply.
