beauty dish and umbrella, whats the difference?

Thank you John, and while it seems like a nice bit of kit, [Interfit XS-Bracket], I've had a read at that and it's only making me more confused  :p

I haven't the faintest idea what's a Bowens S-Fit, or if this will hold the beauty dish in question, or even the SB900 :bang:

I'm still reading, so I may well come back to this in a while.

Again, thank you for the suggestion

Well, that's an SB-900 up there in my photo. Works a treat.

The beauty dish you linked looks like it's an S-Fit going by the bracket they supply with it. Personally though, I'd feel more comfortable with a bracket that's a bit more substantial.

Order it with the bracket it comes with, give it a go and see what happens. If you find it is a little precarious, then just replace the bracket with the Strobies XS. :)

:thumbs:, and again, thank you very much :)

Speaking of fittings, does anyone have any idea of the Nikon SB-900 fits that beauty dish

Too much thinking going on here, I feel I'm being squeezed in size :p

the speedlight just pokes through the hole in the S-Fit adapter. The head on the SB-900 is pretty massive, but it shouldn't have any problems.

Wail, that is the reason I would print the instructions, buy the bits, then give to my dad to make LOL... Would keep him quiet for a week!

Good way of getting things done :); but between my dad [in his mid 80s] and me [in my mid 40s] and the amount of gas we pass-out :gag:, I think it's a fair bet quicker and smarter that I just buy the thing ready-made.

Still, thank you for the DIY link :)

Kaouthia,

In FiTP thread, post #172, ...

Oh good. These Konigs I got a month or so ago are looking like they need to be replaced anyway. ;)

... would you mind telling me how good are these stands, and do you recommend them [I am comfortable buying them, as I am certain FiTP wouldn't be selling them if there were issues with them, but I would like to hear someone else's perspective too]?

Thank you for your troubles :)

Cheap beauty dish by the most excellent Todd @ ishootshows.. This works a treat, so i here, havent made mine yet will post up once I get it done...

Thank you Cornholio, but that's the same one recommended here ...

You could also make one of these yourself for your hotshoe flash..

While I am sure it may be good, I'd rather go with something ready made.

I have a couple of the Konig stands and I think they're very good - for the price. They are quite nicely made and very light, and extend to over six feet.

But they are not very robust, and in particular the spread of the legs, about 15in/38cm, makes them unstable unless the weight is carried directly vertically. Fine for a hot-shoe gun sitting by itself, but not for a metal beauty dish hanging off to one side.

For comparison, I have a couple of regular Manfrotto stands which have 19in/48cm radius legs - only a few inches but it makes a big difference.

If you are shooting outside on rough terrain where they cannot stand vertically, you really want as much width to the base as possible, plus weights. TBH, I wouldn't even think about taking a heavy beauty dish outside without big stands, lots of weight, and a generous sacrifice to the Gods of Wind.

Thank you Cornholio, but that's the same one recommended here ...

While I am sure it may be good, I'd rather go with something ready made.

The curve of the reflecting surface is wrong.

Thanks Richard, as always, very helpful

It seems I've made my list now, just going to go over the quantity and total price. I don't want this to be blown too out of proportion; and I certainly don't want to overwhelm myself with too much gear.

For some odd, and unknown, reason I feel so intimidated by this flash idea ; it's not my piece of cake, but I want to learn a lot more about it.

Ive used a 70cm dish with a 580ex, worked well. also used a 40cm dish with grid with 580ex.

Thank you for that, would you mind linking to which 70cm & 40cm dish you've used, and what grid?

If I am not asking too much, would you mind posting some pictures of the results with each.

Thank you, once again; and sorry to trouble you

I tend to agree with you LOL... two clicks online and new toys are in the post LOL..

if you look at my site carldavisphoto.co.uk on location 1 the last 3 images are with speedlights and dishs and the 2,3,4 images on location 2 are as well.

the 70cm dish is a fotoarte(i think thats right) dish and the grid for that is the lencarta one.
the 40cm dish is a interfit one with grid.
They are both elinchrom fittings connected to a kacey bracket fired with skyports.

Kaouthia,

Yeah, they're fantastic. My comment was a joke in an half-assed attempt to justify spending some more money. :)

As others have said, you *might* have some issues with the weight of a big beauty dish, so either add some weights to the base, or have a look at FiTP's Nano stands. They have a much bigger footprint, and can more easily be held down by surrounding objects if need be (camera bags full of gear, etc) as the feet sit flat on the floor.

A shoot through umbrella is an uncontrolled soft light source that spreads light everywhere.
A beauty dish is a medium/hard light source that is highly directional, and is used to emphasise and enhance shape.

See this article on basic modifiers and this one, also by someone called Garry Edwards, on lighting people - with a couple of examples of beauty dishes in use.

BTW, I'm not certain but I very much doubt whether you can get a beauty dish of usable size that will work with a hotshoe flash.

How abouty thisy....BINGO!

Indeed there are but not those little teenie tinies.

A German store FotoWalser sells a bloody good one.

Some examples from a mate of mine.
