I have a passion for photography and once I have finished my business studies at college I wish to pursue a career in photography and was wondering what it the best way to get into the business?? I know I have to have a portfolio!!

It depends on what area of photogrpahy you want to get into..there are so many different areas of photography.... More info needed...

plan A
Get a job which is not in photography to make ends meet first.
Then play it at your spare time.

plan B
Become a full-time venture photographer

From everything I hear you won't learn a lot about photography working for Venture - only their prescriptive style. And don't take as gospel what lots say about the success of their business model. Lots of franchises have apparently closed in recent times.

Good luck with the diploma - now go get some practice!

Get a job by all means but get one photographic field. Do not just get any job. Stay in the loop some how.

Stay in the loop stay photography some how.

There are lots of freelance jobs that can fill the gaps for you have no booking/shoots etc.

There is money and enjoyment in this game, just decide where you to go.

Fashion? forget it. It's who you know.
Freelance? Yep, lots of work out there. Sports and schools
Stock or Landscape? no money in that anymore as to many togs and pt togs offer images for next to nothing.

Studio? Many ways, Portraits. product work, Boudoir etc

Even take a job in a photographic shop get some good discounts on kit as go.
,
There Goverment tog jobs too. Police/Fire service/Medical Armed forces(might have to join up for that)

Large chains like Venture, Centre Parks. Holiday camps. Cruise ships(hard work)
Get work in a pro lab.

It's easy to make living in this game if you are hungry enough.

22 years I have done it and most of the above. most here wont take a risk because of families, mortgage etc. but then i dont have them and mortgage was paid years ago.

Be prepered to move any where in the Country. I even did a spell in NYC. This is the best career in the world apart from being a pilot. So get out there and go for it!!!

Be aware that it is getting tough out there. Weddings are dropping slowly. Studio portraits are dropping.
This business is 'A luxury item'. Whether it be for private are Business clients. We are the first to get hit in cut backs.
Private will wait till the finances pick up. businesses will use last years advertising /product shots to save money.

3 areas that are recession proof are Schools. Celebs for papers and mags and the Porn industry.

Good Luck.

If you don't know where you're going, any bus will do.

You need to decide what sort of photographer you want to be (don't try and be everything) and then use your business diploma to develop a business plan that will get you there.

That may well mean working outside of photography whilst you build up the necessary resources, skills, experience and contacts.

What do you want to do?
What do you need to do it?
How are you going to get what you need?
