Beat 'all round' lens for d90?!

I have the 50 f1.8 and this was my most used lens for about a year.

I rather like the recently acquired tamron 17-50 f2.8 non vc though.
 
Nikkor 16-55mm f3.5-5.6 is rated very highly for a decent zoom. Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4 is another good choice.

I just use the 35mm f1.8g and will be getting a 50mm f1.8g soon.
 
Big money - Nikon 17-55mm
Medium money - Nikon 16-85mm
Lowish money - Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8
Low money - Nikon 18-70mm

All are good, although the Nikon 17-55 is by far the best medium zoom lens for DX and the 18-70 packs a mean punch for the money.

The you have the 18-200 and 28-300.....

I'm not sure any of these suggestions are really "all round" lenses, but then the op hasn't really given any indication of what he plans to shoot or how much he wants to spend...

I have this lens and its hardly ever off my D90.

I borrowed an 18-200 though and its definitely an excellent all rounder if you want more reach.
 
On a budget the kit lens the D90 normally comes with, 18-105 (3.5 I think), isn't a bad all rounder. Not the fastest or longest but lots of situations covered,
 
Another vote for the 18-200 here, although with reservations.

As far as superzooms go it's one of the best out there, but what you have to remember is, that due to it's wide range, it's a lens full of compromises. That said, these compromises only really become apparent if you are used to the more dedicated lenses on offer, and even then a good proportion of the problems this lens presents can be effectively cured in post processing.

If you're just starting out in DSLR photography and just want to try a bit of everything then this lens is a great catch all, and for some people it really is the only lens they'll ever need. On the other hand if you already know what subject material interests you then there will be better lenses that apply directly to that subject material.

So, I guess the question is: what do you see yourself photographing? If the answer is it's a bit of everything until you find your niche then the 18-200 is a fantastic start. If, on the other hand, you already know what interests you then let us know as we'll be able to suggest a more appropriate and better lens for the task in hand.
 
I'm photographing fights at the moment Muay Thai mainly but fancied turning my hand to different types of photography,it's a big world out there!!just wanted a lens I can play with!!

Personally I think that one of the best things about DSLR's is the interchangeable lens allow you to use the right lens for any given job.

If the Muay Thai fights are indoors, you would likely be well served by a fast telephoto, maybe a 70-200 2.8 or an 80-200 2.8. Something like the 18-200 will work but will be very compromised in low light and in terms of IQ. So personally in your boat I'd maybe suggest a nice fast telephoto and a normal kit type lens of the 18-50 ish sort of range for other stuff. Right tool for the right job and all that.

Unless you're ringside then perhaps 70-200mm is a bit useless and a better option is the 24-70 f2.8 :)

or the beast (28-70) which is a lot cheaper than the 24-70 - if you can find one that someone is willing to prise from their mits to sell :P

If your close and not using flash then a short fast zoom, like a Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 should cost you around £350
