I got fed up with the daily shaving so went to shaving twice a week, and that was a chore, so after 59 years I have decided to grow a beard, it was ok for a week, then the itch came and went, its now six months and no matter how much I prune and take care of it..................I look like a burns victim.

Beardies, how do I make it look like a beard, not just patches of long bristles stuck to me face...... desperate.

TBH, I can't really remember NOT having a beard! Well, not for the past 40 years or so. Used to have it strimmed back to a #1 buzz cut every 6 weeks or so but let it grow during lockdown and have kept it a bit Santaish since. I'm hoping it'll get long enough to do a combover the top!!!

As to how, well, it's down to nature, really. If it's going to grow in patchy, that's just how it is.

I've had a moustache for many years but a couple of months ago after getting an itchy shaving rash, I started growing a beard. The last time I had one was when I was around 30 years old. It's mostly grey now and I keep it fairly short which I like. I got myself a beard trimmer to keep it even. The wife likes it too so I've got official approval!. :)

Beard growth will vary widely i.e. facial hair growth patterns & hair thickness are not always how we would like them.......sorry to @Dangermouse but if the growth is irregular/patchy there is no way to fill in the gaps, unless the quack remedies actually work???

FWIW I had a full beard for a while many decades ago but never liked the maintenance to keep it neat & tidy. Though I kept the 'tach and the goatee beard.....and of course shave around the rest of the visage ;)

I use a beard trimmer to keep the goatee in check :)

So, in summary I have had my facial hair for something like 50 years......phew is it really that long !

Luckily, I don't need to be neat and tidy!!!

Mrs Nod does wave the scissors over the straggly bits when she does the hair but likes the beard fairly long. Used to wind her up every few years and shave it off but it was always just the once - horrendous razor rash...

Had all manner of beards over the last 40+ years, all shapes, lengths, SWMBO forbids shaving it all off but goatee at the moment, maybe 10mm long, various shades of grey/white, you can either grow a full beard or not. Often the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.

At.the ripe old age of 61, I still have a good thick head of dark hair on my head, but my beard is somewhat grey and lacklustre...

I gave up and went back to shaving!!

I am going to give it a few more months to get a bit longer then go to a proper barber and see what can be done with it, try to make it look presentable.

I’ve had a tache for decades and decided to go for a full beard a few years back. My chin area beard grew thick and full, as did the sideburn bit, but the bits that were supposed to join up…..didn’t. So I’ve been forced to settle for a goatee. Looks ok and I’m happy enough with it. I give it a go over with beard trimmers about once a month to keep it tidy.

Had a beard for a few years now.

I have messed up trimming it lots of times!

I have been to barber to trim but i now trim it myself, this time, trying to be more careful. My beard is white now....

I gave up on mine, my facial hair is too curly. It got to around an 3/4 of an inch long and after that any more growth just seemed to increase the density rather than adding length and I ended up looking like Bungle.

Grow it nice and long in anticipation of seasonal work in December :exit:

I do get called Santa occasionally!
I have a white beard too.
When I was working, I was dressed in florescent yellow. A few years ago, as I entered a well known express supermarket,
to do some shopping on the way home,
there was a young mum with 2 young kids by the door the young lad, maybe 3 or 4 pointed at me, and said in a loud whisper, whats that mum?
Mum said shhh it's a man.
I looked at her, winked and said the elves don't let me wear red until December ( this would have been mid November.)
She caught on and said OMG! its Santa!

I carried on walking into the shop, every time I looked round there was 2 wide eyed kids right behind me :D

Embrace the bear faced look!!! (sic!)

Blimey look at that lot!
I've not had that much since my early 20's when there was plenty for a pony tail (y)
Now there is barely enough to cut :D

And yeah stick with the beard, its suits you.

I do enjoy growing a beard but it soon becomes intolerable* and I have to shave it off.

* wife moaning, she doesn’t like em!

Definitely much better with it than without imo ..

You should grow it but to keep it in a nice shape all you need to do is use one of those battery/electric type razors , you know the ones that have attachments like a number - 1 or 2, 3, 4 etc ….. I would normally keep mine at a number 3 which keeps it nice and tidy and in good shape , it’s similar to your own but not just as bushy it’s slightly more of tight short beard …..

I have a couple of battery trimmers but they're not man enough for a full trim. OK for the lip-line. A "proper" mains Wahl trimmer does the trick.

This is what i use:

I use it for under arm hair too!!!

Not quite bald here, just extremely thin on top!!! Just about hides the scar when it gets a little too long.

Had a full beard for years, then read a research paper from Guiness. In it it stated that approximately 162000 pints of Guiness were lost annually due to being trapped in facial hair then wiped away. Being a careful person .... of it came

So now the black stuff dribbles down your chin rather than being trapped and potentially recoverable!!! :P :) :D

I started growing my beard at age 19 , I'm now 67 and still have it . Do a DIY trim with my Whale clippers as and when , My advice is don't worry about looks , Maintain it as you like it.
Saved a fortune in shaving products over the years . My children have never seen the real beardless dad.;)
