Now, don't spoil this for me because I'm watching on Discovery +1 at the moment, but this applies to Bear Grylls generally. Why on Earth would you do that? Discuss...

LOL. I'm not sure what madness you're watching him engaging in at present, but the man is no dope - he's ex SAS with all the survival training, and the short answer is he's cashing in on what he's good at with these TV shows. He also must be earning a fortune from the sales of his 'Bear Grylls' brand clothing and survival gear, as well as being in big demand as an after dinner speaker.

he did an after dinner speach at my sixth form spring ball last year.

he's an ex yoga instructor not quite SAS :D

(mighta been fitness but the pic he showed us was yoga)

Teddy 'Bear' Grylls is was a reserve in Special Air Service as a soldier, medic & survival instuctor. He served for a couple of yrs with the 20th or 21st Regiment, more likely to be the 21st.

The guy is an absolute legend & has done very well for himself!

Great entertainer too!

20th regiment? I'd love to know what that is!

Bear served with the 21st reserves, and not the 23rd reserves regiment.

As for why be BG - why not do what you're passionate about and be paid an awful lot of money.

BUT is show is fake, he stays in all the flash hotels and dont really rough it just for the 10 mins he is being filmed.

I stopped watching it when I found this out.

I've watched one episode of one of his series, he came across to me as a complete richard. To go looking for a poisonous snake so you can beat it to death with a stick and eat it raw just to make a point is the most pathetic thing I've ever seen. In fairness to him, he's just trying to make a living and if that's what people want to see then they are welcome to it, but count me out.

BUT is show is fake
It's not all fake - when you see him rappelling down a waterfall, he's actually doing that - it can't be faked.
The show also clearly includes disclaimers regarding some elements which have to be set up due to various constraints.
As said, it's just a form of entertainment.

Seems perfectly sensible to me :lol::lol:

I agree. Chuck Norris is better.

Chuck Norris once roundhouse-kicked Mr T at the same time Mr T punched Chuck Norris. The result was the 1980s.

Always 1 big shot...
If i was certain of what i wrote I would have said so wouldn't I? Considering I read part of his book over a year ago and never having served myself I think i done quite well to narrow the numbers down to 20 or 21...

Also, I didn't say anything about a 23rd regiment!
So when you come of your high horse & read what i actually wrote you'll see I said he climbed everst at 23!

I've posted you a wee link to show that the full name of the regiment is actually 21 Special Air Service Regiment (Artists) (Reserve) aka the Artist's Rifles!

:woot:

Azrael - please dont start with the name calling and childish behavior. All well and good making your point but no need resort to that.

Don't worry Jimmy, i'm not a trouble maker but like everyone else i won't have any1 take the p*ss out of me unless i deserved it so I'm just defending myself... Nothing more than that.

I just don't like the whole "I'm here at the North Pole, on my own. If any of my kit fails, I'll DIE!!!" - who's holding the camera, sound equipment etc and following you about then

Lol, yea but some of it was always going to be bravado... but it takes kahuna's to do some panto acting in the North Pole don't you think?!

Even thought he may not be roughing it he does some crazy stuff, the guy has immense testicular fortitude. If I was risking life and limb for a TV show I'd want to at least spend the night in a hotel. Its easy to moan when your sitting in an armchair.

I find him very entertaining.

I've met the man and one of my close friends (who quite reasonably thought that he was their friend and neighbour at the time) has been ****ed over by the man. I've no time for him.

He was a Territorial Army SAS medic as far as I'm aware. Makes him no less nuts though :D

I don't doubt it - but maybe I'd have more respect for him if he did it with a load of camera kit strapped to his back. I've got more time for the "support" team.... :cuckoo:

Although i like BG i actually prefer Les Stroud, Suvivorman on Discovery.

This guy actually goes out in to the wilderness with cameras strapped to his back and lasts a week on his own. Same sort of plot as BG only this guy actually does it.

Who cares anyway??!! BG is very pleasing on the eye to watch!

Comments in bold.
Always 1 big shot...
Bigshot? Not sure clarifying a forum statement constitutes a 'big shot', exactly whatever that is.

If i was certain of what i wrote I would have said so wouldn't I? Considering I read part of his book over a year ago and never having served myself I think i done quite well to narrow the numbers down to 20 or 21...
Yeah, great guess. Just as well someone verified it I suppose.

Also, I didn't say anything about a 23rd regiment!
That's the point - you didn't, so I did.

So when you come of your high horse & read what i actually wrote you'll see I said he climbed everst at 23!
High horse? Not me, I'm not the equestrian type personally.Loving the irony too.

I've posted you a wee link to show that the full name of the regiment is actually 21 Special Air Service Regiment (Artists) (Reserve) aka the Artist's Rifles!
Hey! Nice one, you found Wikipedia.

i won't have any1 take the p*ss out of me unless i deserved it so I'm just defending myself... Nothing more than that.
Is someone taking the p*ss then? You don't have a fragile ego do you by chance?
I think the best advice anyone can give you here, is to take a chill pill, loose the paranoia, and wind your neck in. That way you'll find the forum much more amenable and easier to fit in to....

It's someone jumping on a guy because he got a number wrong instead of just confirming his correct guess

Patronising

Also, I didn't say anything about a 23rd regiment!
That's the point - you didn't, so I did.
But why did you? since it wasn't part of the original conversation

Again patronising

Hey! Nice one, you found Wikipedia.
Is being patronising a defence mechanism or something?

Yes, you!

Take a step back before hitting the submit button and read what you intend to post to see if it's likely to cause offence, that way you're less likely to scare off new members before they get a chance to settle in. i.e. give the guy a break.

ahh cool, an argument about nothing.
Yep. Seems some people can't help but stick their beaks in to exacerbate matters.

Ps. just so we're clear, I'm not referring badgerbaiter.

Oh, and by the way.....

No one's jumping on anyone.

Patronising
Your interpretation.

Also, I didn't say anything about a 23rd regiment!
That's the point - you didn't, so I did.

There is no 20th regiment. I'm merely pointing out the missing reg number is 23, not 20

So when you come of your high horse & read what i actually wrote you'll see I said he climbed everst at 23!

Again, your interpretation

]udging others by your standards?

Yes, you!
You'd like to thing so. Loose the martyrdom, it's boring.

You mean like you're doing?

, that way you're less likely to scare off new members before they get a chance to settle in. i.e. give the guy a break..
A break from what? Ridiculing other members? No thanks, not mine (and it seems others) style.

Why don't you give you tiresome self righteousness a rest - it's tedious and unwarranted.

I once went out with a girl who was a really chippy feminist. We had an argument once, and she went, "Oh my GOD! You're just ... so ... ****ing ... MALE! ARGH!"

Hahahahaha

I didn't know whether to say "Sorry" or "Thank you".

I'm amazed I missed this one...
BG is a fun guy...21SAS Medic as others have stated - not important as his military credentials are of no issue here...

He is barking-mad though and usually quite entertaining to watch... I did like his Foreign-Legion programme (those who know me know why) though it was far too soft compared to the real recruit traning depot at 'Castel' even by today's standards, never mind the 'bad' old days at Sidi Bel Abbes...

You should have shouted "Help! Help! I'm being oppressed!"

You started the niggling Mero & i'm quite content for you to finish it with your...
Shown yourself up. Job done.

I haven't shown anything up young man

You proposed something and I added to it for accuracy for other members, so it's nothing to do with niggling. Within that addition there was no malice, no provocation and no ill feeling.

Unfortunately, for what ever reason, you took this personally, resulting in your bizarre comments referring to 'bigshots'.

So with all due respect, most would not say it is me who's shown themselves up.

Perhaps the fitting thing to do now is show the threadstarter some respect, since the thread is now mostly off track..

I stand by my last comment and that'll be the end of it then.

Bringing this back to the original topic subject, allow me to propose that Bear Grylls is "teh awesum".

Discuss.
