Be honest, when was the last time......?

I would hope that everyone reads their user manuals. Why? Because that's what I do for a living, I write them. (Not camera manuals).

I read mine 5 minutes ago. Someone asked a question on another forum about AE-L/AF-L button functions on a D90 and I had to check to make sure I was not talking rubbish.

Last year Digital Photographer mag published a half page reply to a basic question on one of the settings on a Canon DSLR - the A-DEP setting [it's on the rotary dial with A, P, M etc.]. I sent off a scathing email asking why they were wasting valuable magazine space pandering to somebody who was too bloody lazy or stupid to read his manual.

i have a companion dvd to go with my d300 watched it yesterday,(for the second time) wow have i got all that on my camera?:lol:

I always RTFM . . .

That way when my OH (who refuses to RTFM, because of course, men just instinctively know these things) starts putting something together backwards or is getting ready to throw a remote control out the window I can smugly point out what he's doing wrong :p :D

When you spend X amount of hard earned pounds on a piece of technology, it's only common sense to read the 'handbook' that comes supplied.

If your one of those to immediately state "It's incomprehensible!", Just sit down, take a breath and take your time.

There are no logical excuses for not RTFM.

No choice other than to read it this time.
New camera arrived yesterday morning, just before I shipped out to another three weeks in the North Sea. No cameras allowed onboard so it's the manual or nowt !

I do read the manual - I just don't understand any of the technobabble and find I'm constantly referring back to the diagrams at the front to try and work out what they're referring to. :bang:

Oh - and I keep the manual in my camera bag - just in case I need it in an emergency (like it would be any use to somebody who can't remember the names of the basic bits!)

I actually found one bit that was missing from my D700 manual. I've still not found it in the manual or the book I bought.

There is no explanation of how to set rear curtain synch that I can find.....can anyone else find it?

I worked out how to do it in the end by going over all the buttons and menus logically but I could have used it in the manual :)

When I got my D3X, I decided the Nikon manual was far too dense (or maybe it was me that was far too dense) so I bought David Busch's book and read that, cover to cover. Immediately forgot most of it but delve back in as and when needed. There may be other guides as good or better but this one works well for me,

You RTFM?

So own up!

After spending 48 hours & two shifts of technicians trying to fix a Tornado F3 engine fault:bang:

Hammer  WD40  Large sigh  Blooming electricians not doing their job

Manuals are for levelling tables :rules:

I always read the parts of the manual for every area of a new camera i don't fully understand.
I really can't be doing with not knowing how to get the camera to immediately do what i want when theres a chance of a photo in front of me.

Always amuses me when people are amazed at a forum post about some sort of trick they never knew about on their own camera when it was in the manual the whole time.

Why do some people actually seem to want to miss shots before bothering to learn?

You RTFM?

As one of the least macho things you can do, admitting defeat that you can't work it out etc. When was the
I was flicking through mine checking how to alter something and felt pretty pathetic TBH.

So own up!

Always, for everything. I like reading manuals. I even read manuals for stuff I haven't even got yet, if there's an on-line one. I work a lot of long, routine, tedious nights anyway, so it helps pass a little time.
I'm a little strange but (mostly) harmless :-)

That's me!
I need a manual only when dealing with Macs. Still don't understand them.

Have you had a look at my 365 "Top tips for MacOS/Apple"

It might help and I am working on some new additions now.

I have the manual for my camera, flash and one of my lenses in the bag at all times.

always, goes back to my early gaming days when games had proper manuals.

used to read it coming back from the shop, so i knew how to play as soon as i plugged it in :)

looking forward to getting a D3s, that should have a beefy manual :D
