Ok so here goes.
I have an African flat mate who has come up with this stupid plan of getting away with rental camera equipment and selling it off. Apparently, he has done his homework and he presented a very strong and accurate argument of how he could get away with it a couple of hours back when a few of us mates were having a drink.

According to what he said it looks like he is definitely going to try his hand at it because he seems to be heading back to Africa for good and once he leaves all the attempts to track him will go in vain.

Since he is a mate I can’t go to the police and file a complaint against him for something he has not done yet but on the other hand if he pulls this off and leaves the police are gonna knock on my door and find me and my other flatmates there. I told him that once he does it and leaves he won’t be able to enter the UK again but he says that’s not the case and it’s not a criminal offence.

Please pass on this information to the rental companies that you guys might know and ask them to be aware of any rentals for the next week in UB3 area.

Fair play to you for giving the heads up.

I know of one guy on here who runs a hire company so I'll point him in the direction of this thread.

Well, i just want to avoid the mess for everyone. This guy is doing it cause he is broke and back home his families condition isnt that good either. and not being able to reprimand him is just plain lame. too bad if he does this and gets away. ill keep u guys posted if he goes on with his plan, maybe i could tell you what lenses or cameras he has ordered if i can find out. he might be a bit suspicious of me now.

anyway, have a good day y'all.

I would give Special Branch at the airport he will be flying from the heads up. They can discreatly do a "routine" check of his luggage and prevent him getting away with it. Just remember that if he tries and gets caught and he tells the police he dicussed it with you and they see this thread!!!!!!!

Perhaps editing your title to make it a bit clearer would help

"Potential theft of hired lenses" perhaps.

HOLD ON A MIN.

im doing my part by informing the photography community. i just dont want this poor guy to be convicted. i know what a mess he is in and what dire desperation is making him do all this. he has already done a phone scam and gotten away with it and i thought he would stop there.

HE DID NOT DISCUSS IT WITH ME (POLICE PLEASE READ THIS). He just said that doing this was a POSSIBILITY.

I'm sympathetic and you're doing a good thing by making the community aware.

However, technically I think you will find that he did discuss it with you - otherwise how would you have known about his plans?

So does the 'friend' really think that rental companies will lend out kit with no chance of securing their investment against loss, damage or theft?

Nice kind of mates you have...and i think you`ll find that, if caught, you will be implicated !!

He is potentially stealing, and no matter his circumstances, you seem to be accepting that that it`s ok to rip other people off !!!!! Can we all do that with your permission then ????????

Says a lot about you i think !!!!!!

If you are really a caring type of person then surely you'd stop your mate from even trying to steal from the hire companies. As soon as you know he's intending to place an order for some kit let the police know and they can monitor him until he leaves the country.

You say he is a mate but if he's already successfully pulled off a phone scam and is now planning this that could land you in trouble then he's not acting like much of a friend.

I'm in work, but someone just phone the police and tell them about this thread. It probably won't do anything, but better done than not.

ok so i see where this is headed. all those implying that its me who is planning to do this then please, you are speculating a bit too much. i already gave an area code, but i cant give a name or any specifics cause he has not done that yet and im sure he will realise the gravity of the situation and not do it.

now i feel stupid for going out of my way and bringing this up over here.

I would say that being as you know he is planning this then your as guilty as he is. Just tell the Police. Its people like this that lead to higher rental costs, higher insurance costs and a mistrust of people from abroad.
Just tell the police what is happening and who it is then we can keep this scum of our streets.
Don't care if he is having a hard time, theft is not the answer, If he gets away with this, he then tells his mates and they do the same suddenly hire companys will be putting up prices to cover their losses.

I didn't read it like that.

But I do see that you could be implicated after the event - as you clearly know about the impending potential crime.

Thanks for letting me know about this. Now you got me running around scared. i never looked at it this way.

and there is no need to come down so hard on me. what would any of you have done if it was someone you know, a friend, who is planning to do something like this?

id dob him in to the police to many nigerian s/a scum out there that are trying to pull scams on people i have personally had dealings with them in the past. wake up and smell the coffee he aint your mate, lets see him get caught at the airport,he will soon blame the whole idea on you.tell the police and be an honest person.this thread was bound to spark a reaction :bang:

They wouldn`t be people that I`d want to associate with...full stop !!!! Friends, real people who have principles, wouldn`t act this way....if they did i wouldn`t be around them !!!

well, the problem is that im a tenent and i have to share a flat with this guy. if he disappears with the goods it will be me and this another guy who will be questioned. i will let him know today that this will screw us once he flees the country and i cant let that happen. ill try to be mildly threatning and i hope it works. if no then maybe ill have a chat with someone at the constabulary.

i dont want to end up looking like a jerk if he was just kidding about this whole thing.

I think your safest course of action is to contact the police. The very fact you have discused it on here shows you have prior knowledge of a possible crime, to not inform the police when your obviously aware of a possible crime may implicate you. Your certainly going to get a visit if he's using your address and that alone may cause you problems if you ever want to hire at a later date.
Do the sensible thing, after all he just might take your kit as well when he goes.

Why not just call Crimestoppers?

Well, i just have a canon g7 and thats not going to fetch him much.

i wont call anyone, i will just talk to him in the evenin and mildly threaten him saying that this might take me down with him and i cant let that happen, friend or no friend. theft is a serious crime and i will put that in his head...

Trouble is he already knows it is a crime and that is why he is thinking about doing it and fleeing the country, do you really think he will be that worried about the ramifications for anyone else? Personally I would cover your own back.

You are aware that he has succesfully carried out a phone scam. Have you reported him for that or are you implicated in that as well?

then ofcourse ill let the force know. contrary to my previous understanding, im taking this very seriously after what some guys here replied. Its both immoral on his part and carelesness on my part. Also, im a strong believer in karma and im sure if i do the right thing now i will be able to get that motorcycle im dying for.

anyway, this thread needs to lighten up a bit.

With your kind of attitude, I do hope your collar is felt by the local constabulary, and get prosecuted and live the rest of you life with a criminal record, that will really help your job prospects no end.

Most people on here are descent, hard working and law-abiding members of the community who work hard to provide for themselves and their families. And he’s you harbouring a criminal who has, as you so elegantly put it, got away with a phone scam, and you didn’t have the courage nor the decency to report this low-life to the police.

You should be so ashamed of yourself.

well, the phone companies know where to find him and if he doesnt pay they will ruin his credit score. also, a phone scam is not a criminal offence but a civil offense, its like owing someone money. im not here to set his life right or prove myself to be a good samaritan. i just came to know of this phone scam yesterday while he was ranting about it.

and about me harbouring a crimal!!!! i dont have a choice when it comes to picking my flatmates. its not my house he is living in and i didnt know about his criminal intents till last night. :bang:

i have been taking a lot from this community by following posts and learning about photography which is my hobby so i thought i might as well let the 'hard working, law abiding' people know and pass the message on.

i think i have had enough of flak early in the day because of this post. all i can say is that i can talk to him and convince him to not do this and i have devised a way which i wont divulge here.

i guess it will be one less theft and one more happy rental company.

by that i mean, you guys should lighten up on ME and not on the issue.

seriously.. your so called "mate" is planning on ripping a load of people off, you wont report him but you dont want to get any of the blame.

technically i think you can be seen an accessory seeing as you know about the impending crime?

"mate" or not get him reported. how would you like it if i knew a guy that was planning on robbing your house?

This is boring now, do what you are meant to do, if not be prepared for the consequences, but dont keep posting arguments on here, put that effort in to dealing with the situation.

God knows what you are on about ruining his credit score, jees, hes going back to Africa, I really dont think thats going to be an issue for him. Hes not thinking of you, obviously. If I was taken by a scam and found out that he had gone but you were still around and you knew about it, Id come looking for you and so would the law! It is an offence to not act on something when you know a crime is or is going to be committed. Just stop posting on this subject now, your not listening to anyone, so do what you want.

Sometimes I wonder if people actually bother to read the original post! Shutterspd has done the honourable thing by trying to notify hire companies via the forum.

What is there to report to the police anyway? ... I seriously doubt they would or even could do much to stop it from happening, other than inform the hire companies.

Another lynching on TP ....... sad!

wind it in.. if nothing else reporting it would cover the OPs arse.

What he said, I concur.

The sooner this lowlife bogs off back to Africa, empty handed the better. Don't delude yourself he is a mate. He's just made you (potentially) an accessory to a crime/crimes. Your civic duty is not to tell us about it, though that is apreciated but to tell the authorities.

We all have hard times, get skint have problems but don't turn to crime as a solution. Makes my blood boil.

I think I must have a different definition to "friend" or "mates" .. But in my world you dont grass yer mates up to the police.. try to stop him yes... grass him up no...

But then again the whole story doesnt ring true for me anyways:)

BRASH.. Love the sig ...and I was there....
