Looking for recommendations for a gas BBQ. Mine is now 12 years old and seen better days. Looking online is hard as you can't see the quality. Don't like the ones in Homebase/B&Q as they appear really flimsy but budget is up to £300. Best I have seen so far is http://www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-3-burner-gas-bbq/p2140085 - any advances on that?

Can't help with suggestions for gas, but Webers (charcoal) are fantastic for everything from burgers to large roasts. Probably the most popular 'braai' in South Africa where barbecues are a way of life. My son is still using our old one, which we bought about 20 years ago, a couple of times a week.

Just a very basic kettle BBQ, about 70CM diameter.
It is after all about the cooking, and the meat/fish/veggies will not recognise a fancy name on the side.

Just had a look at the spec sheet and the 10 year "limited warranty" is only 1 or 2 years on some parts, so that's a bit of a con. http://s7v1.scene7.com/is/content/JohnLewis/bbq_specs_23032016pdf

Sorry. Gas all the way for me.

Actually, having said that now been searching for charcoal!!!! Only issue is how long until i can cook, thought it was an hour+ but seems to be 20 mins?

Weber gas every time. Bit expensive but so easy to clean and last for years, so cheaper in the long term.

It's only 20 mins til you can cook and your food will have a smokey taste which is kind of the point in the first place. Well it is for me anyway.

Get decent charcoal like big k. Light it go in the house and get the meat sorted and time you've done that it's time to cook. I was under the impression you had to wait for the coals to heat with a gas one too?

I used to have a gas BBQ, and it was great...loved it, but when I moved into this house, it came with a rather swish brick built charcoal BBQ.

There honestly is no similarity when it comes to the taste of the finished food.
Gas bbq'd food is bland in comparison (I'm talking about unmarinated or flavour brushed food) and could just as easily have been cooked under a kitchen grill.

On charcoal, the food has that smokey taste that separates BBQ food from just grilled food.

I'd never go back to gas :-)

Give or take 30 minutes on a Weber. You can speed things up a bit with a starter chimney but I've never bothered with this, unless I'm cooking a big roast and know I'll have to add more coals at some point.

i have a broil king gas bbq which is great mid week but i do love my weber charcoal 57cm charcoal bbq. Ready to go in 20-30 mins with a chimney starter :)

I used to swear by charcoal but went for an outback apollo last year which is gas and love it.Just so much more convenient and tbh I didnt notice a great deal of difference taste wise.If you use good meat nice marinades etc and can cook well it tastes as good IMO.

Do your Neighbors a favour and forget it, Flaming things stink and the food tastes awful.

Horrible things should be Banned

Your neighbours clearly have no idea how to BBQ.... Or they just reaaaally don't like you  ;)

So whats the problem of walking a few step into the Kitchen and cooking the food properly??

BBQ is cooking "properly" when it's done right.
You don't like it? Fine, don't do it.
Your personal dislike is no reason for others not to.
My neighbours are Muslim....doesn't stop me cooking bacon, and with the kitchen door open on a warm day.

Yes Kitchen, not stinking the Neighborhood with Lighter Fuel or what ever people use.

Blimey yeah, end of the world stuff, that.
(Like random capitalisation ;) )

:D I'm afraid I'm with Stryvya on this one when it comes to BBQs. :$ At the first hint of some warm weather, suddenly several million BBQs will all be lit up simultaneously at around 3 pm and add the scent of skunk (which, that, too, seem to be an increasingly common theme) and by 6 pm the air becomes like Venus's choking atmosphere with my house smelling like a back street take away.

Weather-wise I am expecting a warm up during the course of the week, but because most of us will be at work or college at that time, I suspect the BBQ thing won't kick in until Saturday . . . when by then there is likely to be an increased risk of thundery showers breaking out. :wacky:

I tend to agree on that point, with the over use of the paraffin blocks, / liquid fire starters.
It seems they are in such a hurry they are cooking with the damned things, the food must taste pretty awful.

They should really learn how to start a decent "fire" without all that stuff.

I am watching this thread with interest. Currently I do not have a bbq and quite fancy a charcoal one.
BBQ season always makes me hungry at home, so I figured time to join in :)

The Webber ones do look good value.

You are entitled to your opinion.
It puts you in a significant minority.
Just because you don't like something doesn't mean that is what should happen.
I don't like children, you don't see me posting in threads pointing out that they should be banned? What I tend to do is simply avoid threads where they are being discussed as I know my opinion would be unwelcome.

Indeed. A few bits of paper, some kindling and you are away. Just as quick too, and for those concerned you also earn more man points for doing it right (y)

They are OK, but I couldn't eat a whole one.

:D

And they would be too big to fit on those disposable BBQ trays you get from Sainsbury's. That's another thing about BBQs, the food must taste rather foul when done on those little things.

But does that the Minority are always wrong, or is it because Society panders to the unthinking majority and S*d the rest of us.

OH! , and B&G, Argos, Tesco etc would not make so much Profit so prices of Burgers, etc would have to go up.

Stop whingeing and campaign for a ban then, whilst the rest of us get in with it.

Has it occurred to you that the unthinking minority trying to ruin it for the majority who do enjoy something are the ones your ban suggestion is pandering to?

There is no right or wrong when no harm is done. Only opinion. And if your opinion is in a minority then yes, society will indeed think s*d you. Deal with it, accept you are different, move on. Remember, it's awesome to be different, but it's rude to try and get others to conform to your different views.

Not even bbq'd? I know, silly idea, it would probably take a while... :D
You've been to a hog roast? right? :D

I never understood those, either. Unfortunately you tend to see the remnants of those in local parks in the summer, where people have used them and left them where they lay.

FFS at least dig a fire pit and let others use it as well :D

I bought a barrel style one up tesco last week. I've not bought a decent brand one before like a Webber or something. Can they that much better?

Build quality i guess, the last bbq i bought was 2/3 times the price of a typical tesco one but much more solid and robust.
