There was a program on the beeb last night about london and how its a black hole sucking the rest of the country into it. I forget what it was called, but there was a bit at the end showing an old housing estate that had been deserted for a few years in the Elephant and Castle area. Im just wondering where that was? They did give a name but i cant remember.

could of been, hard to tell with google streetview as their images were probably taken when people still lived there

Its the only one I can think of in that area, and its absolutely massive.

BBC I Player?

Almost certainly the Heygate - it's been a battle ground of council-sponsored gentrification, with some remarkable financial deals taking place

I go past it nearly every week day.

Looks like the sort of place they filmed episodes of "The Bill"

They did, a lot. Many episodes along exactly that stretch of road.

BTW, when the lady from Southwark Council says that they'll have a mix of "private homes, shared ownership homeland social rented homes", in the new development, she omits to mention that the estate will have gone from nearly 1200 social rented homes down to a mere 79 in the new scheme.

LB Southwark sold the 22 acre site in Zone 1 to the developers, Lend Lease, for £55m. Not long after, the adjacent 1.5 acre Oakmayne Plaza site changed hands between two private developers for £40m. It has cost the council £65m alone to evict and decant the tenants from the Heygate and to secure the site over the last ten years. LB Southwark have everything possible to keep this information out of the public domain, citing 'commercial confidentiality', even taking the Information Commissioner's Office to court when ordered to release their viability assessments for the scheme by the ICO.

Many of Southwark's planning rules for on-site affordable housing and car parking have also been waived for the Heygate redevelopment.

My son (student and is moving) lives across the road from that, well on the New Kent road.....it is a bloody eye sore and he has informed me that they are demolishing it.....there are street gangs that hang about it and there was a recent rape recently.....

thanks peeps. iPlayer is blocked at work, cant think why ;) I was thinking about it as a good photo location, it looked close enough to civilisation to make a run for it if things got dodgy.

You need to watch out for "Avon"...... local gang leader(he is a total t***).....He stops my young lad and demands that he joined his gang.....my son is 6'4"ish says in his deep Irish accent "would you like to swim in the Thames?" The little dirt bag now hides when he sees my son

You're too late now I think, its smothered in scaffolding today so you can't see the art work anymore, and the developers have fenced the area off big time, and allready smashed half of it down. ... chance gone.

Yes. There hasn't been any public access for the best part of a year now.

Edit: unless you're one of those Urbex types, of course :)

thats a shame, i assumed that program was made quite recently. Ah well. The place looked pretty interesting though, like Pripyat but more knives and less radiation.
