So i just go on Flickr as i was looking at someones image large on here and i notice i have mail...

It's from BBC springwatch and they want to use an image of ivy on a wall i took (lol) for an article on their new BBC Earth website

My worry is.... will they just use the image that is on Flickr? they say they want a 16:9 ratio they will be cropping too etc..

if they just take from Flickr then great/excellent/chuffed!

BUT:

If they need me to resend i can't because it's such an old image that never got saved with pc loss recently:( and if i download the flickr one and do the ratio the file size is teeny :(

Does anyone know and put me out of my misery

What size is the Flickr image?

size of image is 1440x960 i have no idea on file size?

if i down load original it's only 1.06mb and if i alter it its a measly 267 or there abouts kb :(

Thats fine for the Web. Longest edge will still be 1440 pixels wide.

So even with the small file size it would be alright? i just looked and it's under 200kb eek

That will be fine. Well done btw. :)

Look forward to seeing it on the site.

Do you still have the Hard drive from the old pc, as you can get leads to plug into it and convert it to an external drive and drag the image of that way

yeh the old laptop is shoved in the cupboard half dead but if i'm honest i don't remember seeing it on there when i tried to transfer what i could a little while ago, its a 2012 photo of some ivy, didn't seem like an important shot to keep as i had to be careful what i kept and didn't, with no external hard drive etc i couldn't afford to keep crap on the laptop

Check out Fleabay make sure you get the right one as in sata or IDE cabling, you then have a spare drive. I have just done this to a 128gb SSD drive as well

If it's for website use then it should be fine at 1mb+

One dunt with my left, highly polished DM boot and you're toast lady.

Ah but i could do the same in knee high patent (super shiny) DM's if i wanted then see who hits the floor first:p

or you would if i still wore them!

Yeah i really should just to get a few more bits off, i am a bit clueless with things like that though

well if i adjust to their ratio for them it drops to below 200kb, not sure why such a drastic drop... i'll have to hope they just lift the one on flickr as is

I'd pay to see that.

haha.. they were my all time fav boots and have been for years, gutted i don't wear them anymore... am looking to see if i'd get much for them but even then i don't want to part from them

IDE cabling & Sata Cabling

Take out your old HDD and check what pins match

@Digisatman thanks for those they help a lot, when i had my laptop thread going quite a few suggested removing the hard drive to save more of my lost stuff- i do need to get it sorted

Didnt we establish that the hard drive was failing on Ts laptop last time out ... If so it's worth it to try and recover the data but i wouldnt advise using it as a spare

On the OP 200kb is the compressed size, an uncompressed tiff derived from the same image would be about 1mb - not great for printing , but it should be fine for a website, I can't see them wanting an original as they'd have to downsize it for web use anyway

The editor you're using is obviously compressing the jpegs more than the one you used for the original Flickr upload. Most editors have a setting somewhere which lets you set the amount of output jpeg compression. Increasing that should give you back the kind of file size you expect. But it probably doesn't matter. Changing jpeg compression is probably only reducing the number of different colours in the image. It usually has no noticeable effect on highly detailed things like leaves. You notice it in large areas of uniform colour which change colour very slowly, such as blue skies, where it can lead to obvious lines of discontinuity sweeping over the sky, such as banding.

Thanks for that, that makes sense, i lost my editing programs a little while back with dead laptop so i am just using a trial of lightroom for now and hadn't paid much attention to the finer points, but that helps me in future as i had noticed before too

Just sell the images of you wearing them to @BRASH and keep em. :D

Congrats on being the chosen one. :)

Theoretically thats good thinking lol!!:D:D

Thank you;)

Most editor programs have an "options" or similar button when you go to save it as a jpg, most software by default won't have this set to the highest quality (lowest compression) and that's likely why your file size is shrinking more than you'd expect. Open your original image, make your changes, then when you go to save it look for the quality/compression option before you actually hit save and set it to highest quality/minimum compression.

I can't believe i didn't look at the settings in LR when i exported it... i should have as it's a trial so not set to what i had.. i've just downloaded again and it's just over 900kb now.. at least better than before, thank you:D

Congrats T.

It's a nice Ivy shot that isn't a typical one you can see elsewhere - the wall and dof make it stand out :)

Do you get a free years TV license for letting them use it? ;)

Thanks Nick:D
