BBC drops half of F1 coverage

I already feel slightly guilty at spending 5 hours on a race weekend watching the qualifying and race on BBC! I don't want more, I just don't want to pay for it!

Reading this morning on the Sunday Times website that former M&S boss Sir Stuart Rose is being lined up by CVC to replace Bernie Ecclestone... might be good to have someone different in charge..

I can see it now "this isn't just the pinnacle of corporate motor racing, this is M&S corporate motor racing"

WIth X-factor contestants providing between race entertainment :gag:

Martin Brundle has now announced he is leaving BBC to head to SKY. i wonder who will replace him at the BBC?

I dont have sky either so won't get to see all the races so i just hope they still keep as much of the BBC team as possible as they do such a great job.

Producer at USP Productions who do the 5 Live Coverage has confirmed that this is David Croft's last commentary for 5 Live so I guess that means either going to BBC One or to join Brundle at Sky.

Eurosport is free, it's not a premium channel. I have it on my tv and I certainly don't pay or it! I barely even watch it unless the OH want to watch showjumping.

Was intrigued by this and went hunting, alas to no avail :(
I have a sky system but no subscription,I do have a freesat card (£20) that I bought primarily to watch MotorsTV
I can only assume you have some form of subscription that allows the viewing of Eurosport ?.....I remember it used to be available on the analogue set up and latterly only available with German commentary....not sure if that's still going

So is there any way of getting the new F1 Sky channel with a freeview box without having to sign up to sky itself? Basically as a massive F1 fan for the last 18 years or so I don't really mind paying like £10 a month for it but I don't want all the extra channels and prices that come with Sky.

In other words what is THE cheapest way of getting the F1 next year.

Processional races at new tracks which he thinks are wonderful because they have fancy facilities that he can impress all the corporate guests at, while traditional tracks struggle because of the fees charged to hold the race?

Undoubtedly he did improve things commercially for the teams in the past, but he's got so much money now that he has lost touch with reality (£12 million for a wedding?).

wow processional? did you watch this years faces?? I dont disagree that some of the new circuits lack the character of the classics, but the point is, would there actually be ANY races for F1 now?

Lee Mackenzie, Jake and DC are confirmed with the BBC next year

Maybe not processional, BUT a lot of the overtaking is false due to DRS, they have a rule that allows the car behind to get a fake 10mph speed increase down a straight.

Button has had some awesome race with great race and over taking skill, but not sure about a lot of other drivers.

I will admit to not see all the races as I how tend to fall a sleep while watching F1 :|

Probably down the pub with a couple of pints! £7 per race.
Failing that by finding one of the live streaming websites on the Internet and watch (in questionable quality) for free.

If only I had mates who were in to F1. My local is a nice real ale boozer and they don't have even one TV.
I watched Le Mans in June on a dodgy feed. British Eurosport via an Indian stream. :naughty:

Kimi at lotus renault then, the sponsors events will be a bag of laughs with him and petrov doing it

live streaming...highlights...uh

I don't want non of that, I want my bottles of desperado, a kilo bag of wotsits and 5 hours on the settee.......or nothin

I find it odd that opinions of the entertainment value of F1 can be so polarised, I can't think of a sport that I cannot watch, they all contain the same elements yet F1 seems to be some kind of marmite entertainment despite its additional attractions

I am thoroughly ****ed off that F1 will not continue in its current form on auntie, the last couple of years at least have been awesome.

I Cancelled Sky years ago so I'm going with the free F1 Coverage on German TV RTL With BBC radio for audio, for the £25 the kit cost me you get lots more Sports TV Free too.
Eurosport Germany is free to watch for Wsbk.extra motogp coverage the BBC Dont cover is on the sport1 channel.

I assume you can only get RTL if you have a satellite dish? Does it stream on the net by any chance?

I wonder what the new BBC lead commentator (Ben Edwards) for BBC will be like. He was the anchor for the failed sky F1 channel a few years back.

I was disappointed Brundle went to sky, but he was a better analyst than lead commentator. Coulthard will take Brundles place and better him I believe. He has more vim than Brundle and was a near world champion.

While I'm at it Jake Humphrey has settled in to his role very very well. When I first saw him he struck me as too young, but he is a very capable lead anchor.

I'm gutted the Canadian GP is one that is not being shown, it's the most exciting GP of the year.

My dad bought a car off of Bernie Ecclestone when he was a car dealer. My mum described him as a runt.

I will have my ears covered for non BBC races. There is no way it will go over to sky fully. The advertisers won't allow it.

Not buying sky :)

I think he will be brilliant! IMO he's possibly the best motorsport commentator there's ever been. Yes, even better than Murray ;)

Put his name into You Tube and have a listen to some of his commentary of the American Indy Car / CART series. The guy exudes an unbelievable passion and has an encyclopaedic knowledge of all things motorsport. I just wish he was going to Sky with Brundle. That would be an incredible pairing :p

Agreed, Ben Edwards is excellent. I'm waiting to hear if Antonio Lobato will move to Antenna 3 now that La Sexta have lost the rights. Antonio is an awesome commentator.

Ya Ben Edwards sounds good. Well done beeb. Glad that Legard bloke isn't back.

I think a decent commentator need to be able to send his voice to that extra octave when something extraordinary happens. So the ability to sing soprano is a must in my book :)

As a member of the church of Murray (pronounced murai) I find this scandalous :)

I have Sky HD which means that I can get the F1 channel as part of my my subs. If I didn't I still wouldn't subscribe to any of the sports channels as I think we have been sold short by both Bernie and the Beeb and despite my love of the sport I was willing to give it up rather than give the Don more money as this was a back door deal which was done between all three parties.

I also hope that the live pit walks will continue in some sort of fashion :-D

...I think you may find that there's going to be an awful lot more than that ;)- Cameras and Sound will be going to, and coming from, places they've never been allowed before. Pre-race coverage and shows will be huge (there's an entire 24 hour channel to fill!), and tons of historical races and behind-the-scenes stuff will be shown and put in context... the goal is quite simply that by the time the BBC show their first race, there will be no reason for any fan who's seen what's on offer to want to watch their limited coverage. Its very aggressive, way more than Sky have ever put into any new channel before and vastly more than than the Beeb has spent...there's a lot of very fanatical fans who are behind it and its nothing like the basic coverage they've done before. I can't say more as not sure how much is officially public until the season kicks off... ;)

p.s.
the "free with HD" priceing surprised everyone....including Bernie E.!...

I'm sure sky will give fantastic coverage and will pull out all stops. It's their loss leader at this time. It will end up as a subscription only if they have their way.

The fact is though, (as far as the UK market goes) F1 needs the BBC, or another terrestrial broadcaster. The audience would have gone through the floor if sky had exclusive rights.

I would have liked the BBC to have said to Bernie, Go to sky in 2013 with our blessing. See you in 3 years time. I loved boxing and was mourning the loss of it on ITV. I don't miss it now. It will have been the same with F1 if necessary.

Yes no doubt SKY will pull out all the stops but at the end of the day this will be a subscription sport in 2013, unless you can get Euro Sat or equivalent?

I have been a fan for many, many years but refuse to pay for the privilege (maybe because we/I have had it free (sort of) for so long) It just pains me how the whole process was managed behind closed doors and we the real fans are mugged again.

F1 shows what the UK is able to achieve and that we have the skills and technology available here, so the F1 arena is great for the UK.

That said I look forward to the 2012 season and hope that this will be a great season.

People said exactly the same about the Premier League.....

You are correct there, however F1 has (i suspect) has a much smaller audience , albeit a loyal one. It's not just Bernie that calls the shots either. The team sponsors will go somewhere else if the viewer figures drop.

There is one race every 2 weeks, there are loads of premiership games all week. F1 a high quality advertising board, but it will only keep that allure if viewing figures increase.

In these times of austerity I can't see a huge amount of people running to subscribe to sky that has not subscribed already.

Haven't they been there before:

and how long did that last?
