Omnibus: David Hockney's Secret...
...Knowledge

Part of BBC FOUR's season celebrating the Art of Arts TV.

Filmed in 2001, in Bruges, Florence and in a stunning Hockney designed set in Hollywood, David Hockney reveals startling evidence that cameras have been a secret tool for artists since the 15th century, a discovery that solves century old mysteries surrounding famous paintings, and connects with film television and computer produced pictures.

if i didnt despise hockney i might watch it. all the other hockney documentaries have been total rubbish.

some people might find it interesting though

I especially enjoyed the application of modern physics and geometry used to calculate the exact position of the mirror lens/glass lens and even where the subjects stood, probably a bit too geeky for your average art punter but I found it quite fascinating.

I liked him pointing out the dates and the subtle transition from painting by eye, to the photorealistic paintings in the space of 10-15 years.
"did artists just get better at painting all of a sudden"....
And the proof....the proof that these works were painted/traced through a lens reflection, the areas where the painting itself, whilst sharp had....a depth of focus.
Perspective changes, like a badly sewn pano.

yeah, it was good, and he was good in it, if ya like that sorta thing.

I went to Garrowby Hill last year to shoot the scene of one of Hockneys paintings.
It turned out to be more of an impressionist art work, with only a passing resemblance to reality.
He would have had to have been smoking weed on a 40 foot stepladder to paint this as he saw it.
Its a good likeness, but super exaggerated
I think its relevant because his style/methods/talent obviously is the complete opposite of the photorealistic paintings he revered, and eventually proved them to be not entirely on the level.
