Bayonet or screw-in fitting?

Guys,

With the summer and bright sun shine coming I am looking to buy a petal lens hood and I can see that they come in the two types of fitting. Am I correct in thinking that the bayonet type fits around the lens so that another filter (say, polariser) can be screwed on? Thanks.

I generally much prefer screw in hoods as they seem to generally be higher quality and usually metal instead of plastic. Metal hoods tend to be threaded to accept filters (at least the ones I have used). The cheap and nasty plastic bayonet hood that came with my 50mm 1.4g was simply appalling and I gave up using it.

Thanks, Adrian. I'll be looking for a metal one then.

Bear in mind that not all lenses accept bayonet fit hoods.

I have a couple of lenses with screw-in hoods (all of which are plastic) and fit filters to the lens first and then fit the hood to the filter.

Consider also, if the end of your lens rotates when you zoom/focus then you'll have to keep re-aligning the hood to get the full effect. For lenses like that a simple circular hood is easier to use.
