How to photograph a Christmas bauble on the tree without showing yourself or the camera in the reflection of the bauble? I tried but failed. Logic says use a telephoto from a distance but is this the only method or is there a better way?

I've heard of people using a wide angle and putting the subject in the top half of the frame then cropping to remove the rest. I think it was used for photographing mirrors. I'll see if I can find the article.

You could use a tilt/shift lens shifted off centre ?
Obviously not much use if you don't have a T/S lens though. Sorry.

I'm certainly no expert, but over the past few years I have done my share of bauble shots.

Tripod, to the side of the bauble you're concentrating on, not direct on - you want anything from 1/5 to a few seconds of an exposure, depending on the lighting. Trial and error really. The less shiny baubles will cut down reflections more so, like this:

Nikon D800E [EXIF].
Lens: 24.0-70.0 mm f/2.8
Exposure: 0.6
Aperture: f/2.8
ISO Speed: 100
Focal Length: 62 mm
Exposure Bias: -2/3 EV

Certainly not a great one, but it's the only one I've done this year so far.

Have done some where I purposely included reflection, like this one, which won photo/twitter pic of the day on Christmas eve 2 years back on Pix.ie :) :

Camera Model NIKON D90
Exposure 4 sec
F-Number f16
Focal Length 50 mm
ISO 200
