Hi Guys done a search but cannot find anything.

Been saving like mad for canon 70-200 f2.8 IS (original) but seems like i will be a long way off for a while yet.

Was thinking of the sigma 70-200 f2.8 os

What i would like to know is people who have owned both or even tried both as a mate might have one etc and opinions as to how far apart they are in terms of image quality etc.
Thanks

Be patient, keep saving, perfect your technique, so when you get that lush Canon lens all will be well!

The sigma gets good reviews and a few on here have them so I'd expect some glowing reports shortly.

I have the Sigma OS for my Pentax K-5 and the MKI Canon IS for my 7D.

I know they are different cameras but IQ wise there really is very little in it. I would happily use the Sigma on the 7D if needbe. Build quality is better on the Canon lens though.

Thanks fro that Mike
Just what I was after. I think I will just keep saving and wait till next year and get the canon,

Thanks again

I always wanted the Canon 70-200 f2.8 IS L MkII but couldn't afford one from the off. I ended up building up to it slowly by buying the f4 non IS to start with and using that for a few months while carrying on saving. After a while I sold the f4 and another lens and got the f2.8 IS L MkI and used that, again while carrying on saving up. Eventually I got there by selling the MkI and an old camera body and got the f2.8 IS L MkII.

It took me around 8 months from getting the f4 to the f2.8 MkII and had the use of 2 great lenses while waiting to get it. I sold the f4 for a £5 profit and the f2.8 MkI for a £15 loss but the £10 was nothing over 8 months really, just a hire price.

I've not used a Sigma 70-200 but I've heard great things about them being on a par with the Canon MkI anyway. I have got 3 other Sigma lenses which are all very good and I wouldn't hesitate to get a 70-200 if I was in the market for one. Like me, you could always get the Sigma and use it while saving for a Canon. You never know, it might turn out to be that good you'll forget about getting the Canon and if you've been saving you'll have some spare cash for something else.

As I just said in another thread, I had the same decision to make, only on the Nikon side. I was eyeing up the Sigma OS too. In the end I went and ordered the Nikon VR II. For the extra sharpness, build quality and re-sale value [if I ever decided to] I think it's worth the extra. I found it on ebay for a lot cheaper than I would pay in stores here, so happy enough on that.

Get the Canon.

Give me a shout when you are ready ... I have a hankering for the MKII so may well be ready to sell my MKI after Xmas ;)

Before I get a gentle reminder I will of course list it on here beforehand. :)

See this is the trouble, been checking out prices of all the 70-200 range and the f2.8 is the one to get with no doubt but looking at 2nd hand prices for the mk1 I can get the mark 2 from amazon for just a few hundred pounds more so the debate goes on in my head.

With the VAT off I can get one from amazon for just over 1400 new for the mk2 now 2nd hand mk1's have been going for about £950 ish on ebay and around the grand mark on here so the debate continues.

Do I want the hassle of buying and selling to get what I want?? probably not so will just have to see what santa will bring me.

After a while with the MKI you will start to wonder how much better the MKII is so you may as well just go straight in and get the MKII to begin with.

From what I have read you can pair it up with the 2x and get something that is just as good as the 100-400mm so that's a big bonus.

If you don't mind imports you can get a new one at Panamoz with a 5% discount for paying by bank transfer for around the £1300 mark. Great lens, great price and great service from them. Almost makes it worth the extra saving time to get the best.

No problem here with the Sigma 70-700mm lens with Nikon fit
