Battery Grip

Hi all,

I have a slightly technical question to ask. I have a 450d, and since I'm going travelling soon I'm thinking of picking up a few spare batteries. I'm also considering a battery grip.

My question is: will two batteries in the camera (using the battery grip) last longer than using two batteries separately without the battery grip? This may sound like a bit of a trivial question, but I'm not interested in a battery grip for any other reason than if it might prolong battery life as opposed to using the batteries separately.

Cheers.

Two batteries in the grip should last exactly the same amount of time as two individual batteries.

The bonus however are that, you don't need to change mid shoot (as said), its FAR more comfortable to hold the camera and using the camera in portrait orientation is lovely (you get an extra shutter button). Having a grip on my 5D has been a revelation and I wouldn't go back to the bog standard body :)

If you only want a grip to act as a glorified battery holder, personally I'd just use a spare pocket for the extra battery.

I'm not a fan of grips, I have one on my D700 and it won't fit in my bag anymore!

...always wanting to help others out, it would fit nicely in my bag.

I've just bought a Grip for my 30D and I'd recommend that if you want one to just double battery life don't get one !!!

The grip + extra battery adds 412g (nearly a pound in old money) to the weight of the camera & I found it a heavy lump to lug around for a day.

So unless you're doing a lot of portrait shots I'd say just carry the extra battery in your pocket & save the money for other goodies :)

The main upside of a grip is just that, 'the grip' the camera is much eaier to hold if you have big hands like me. Batteries will last the same amount of time but as said ^ you won't have to worry about changing so often. The downside for travelling would be the weight and the extra 'pro' look it gives the camera making it a better target for thieves.

I use Nikon, but from the little that I have handled Canon models I would say that they would benefit form the use of a grip as I found them to be a bit on the small size for me.
