I tried searching for batteries but it did not bring up an answer.

Is it WISE to use alternative batteries rather than the original make, as the cost is substantially reduced with alternatives.

I have a new 7d and wanted to carry a spare battery and have been looking at Energizer or Blkuemax, who produce the ones that fit the canon (LP-E6).

Would appreciate comments please.

Phottix Titan ones from Etefore on Ebay - I've used them in nearly all my cameras, both Canon and Nikon and they've been :thumbs:

You'll probably get two for £12 delivered or something daft like that, if you don't mind buying from HK.
 
Since around 2003 I've had about 20 Canon BP511 cheap substitutes off ebay. Mostly priced around £5-ish. Only one started to die prematurely, but still a bit more than a year on. About five of the oldest ones started to die after maybe.....guessing here.....three or four years? The rest are still going strong. In recent years I've started marking each battery with a number and date of purchase.

So if your cheap ebay battery only lasts a couple of years - and in reality it will probably last much longer - it's still worth it compared to buying a maker's original.
 
I also use after market battery's in all of my Nikons. Never had a problem. Got mine from 7dayshop. All of my battery's are numbered so that they are all used in order.
 
Do a search on ebay user batterybusiness.

I have 2 of their OEM ones and they are identical to my origional Canon battery. They even have different serial numbers and show all the info in the camera, they charge in the origional charger too.

Phottix Titans don't show any info and must be charged in the Phottix charger.
 
I have to ask this question, do you need a 2nd battery and why?

I would have thought it was fairly obvious. However, as an example, my IS lenses draw some strain and when shooting 300-500 shots, the one battery starts to get low and I would hate to get to the stage of not being able to shoot.

To all others who have replied to help, many thanks. I have just ordered 2 compatible batteries via e-bay and the 7 dayshop, at just over £23 in total, instead of paying three times that for one original.

I also had the opportunity this evening of posing the same questions to several members in our club and they all said - go compatible. Several of them have 4 and 5 back up batteries in reserve.

bought compatible batteries about 3yrs ago from 7dayshop 2 4 a tenner still going strong. I read somewhere that they're made in the same place as the original batteries!
 
I've got 7dayshop batteries as well, and an Ansmann which came with my camera. All of them give good life. Not bad for £3.96 each.

Are you saying you only get 500 shots from a 7D before the battery goes?

Battery life would depend on a number of factors though, rather than just # of shots.

I've had a single charge last for ages on some occasions, but other times I've had a battery die after not long at all if the weather is really cold, or I'm taking lots of continuous bursts
 
If you use a battery grip you need a 2nd battery, if you are away for a weekend hiking I need various batteries, I have 6. The third party ones are cheap so no big deal, better to have them than not.

Battery life will depend greatly on what the togger is shooting, long exposures, AF tracking plus loads more, all effect battery life, it would be impossible to say how many shots one would get unless the circumstances were controled.

I've used aftermarket batteries in my dslr and lots of other equipment and never had a problem.

I do find that most don't have quite as much capacity as the original.
 
Can I point out that Canon LP-E6 batteries have a chip in them that tells you the battery level, Battery life and have a serial number. They aren't the same as the BP511's.

You have to be carefull what you buy as some will not charge in the origional charger, some give no battery level, some show battery level but no other info.

A number of us have bought what appear to be genuine batteries that are fully compatible with the origionals and even come in a box almost identical.

Just be carefull what you buy.

I have 2 from Batterybusiness on ebay, you can't tell them from the real one, they even have different serial numbers.
 
got 2 batts for the 5d last week, off amazon. £8.60 for 2 delivered.
no problems with them. im going to order some more. winters coming
 
Just on 7dayshop ... I bought a LP-E4 compatible for Canon1DMkIII and within 2 months or so it stopped taking charge and died. Sent it back and got a replacement. Replacement lasted about a month before the same problem.
Hoping for 3rd time lucky now!
