Batch Renaming Of Image Files

I believe you may be able to do that with Lightroom, although it would mean exporting a fresh copy with the new name.

Fast stone image resizer will batch rename too.

Irfanview for WIndows (free)
Namechanger for MacOS (also free) or use the built in rename function of Finder if your version supports it.

Brilliant stuff - thanks guys, I'm sure one of the above is bound to suit me and my limited technical ability :)

You can do that in Lightroom without exporting, can't you? Select all the images you want to rename (which might be exported JPEGs if that's how your workflow flows), F2 or Menu>Library>Rename, then enter the fixed bit and the first number in the sequence.

@StewartR I believe this only renames the original filenames, not the any exports, which would have to be remade.

You can just add the folder with the exports to lightroom to rename there else in future if you've not already exported set up the export settings to rename the files as it exports.

Craig.... any chance you can add some punctuation please? .... I can't make sense of it :(

To clarify what I meant however, if you've already exported the jpegs you wouldn't rename the original files you would add the folder containing the exported imges to lightroom and work on those files directly. You can add the folder through the import dialogue using the add option at the top to add the folders location to your lightroom catalogue. Alternatively you can just drag the folder in to the lightroom library module and it will add them for you.

Going forward when you export images in the export dialogue there is an option to rename the files as they are exported, ticking the rename field will allow you to create naming templates that include sequential numbers so you can export them so they have the correct naming schemes already applied. It's probably worth saving any settings you use frequently as export presets to make it quicker.

It will rename whichever images you select. So - assuming you added the exports to the Lightroom catalogue when you created them - if you select the exports you will rename the exports.

If course, if you didn't add the exports to the catalogue when you created them, then this is a roundabout method and you'd be better off using one of the other tools.

If Danny works like me (creating pages in an album design package), the pages won't be in his LR catalogue, so Bridge is the quick option that he already has.

Is it for existing files or files yet to be created? If the latter, use the correct export naming convention in lightroom. Plenty of sites in line that give worked examples.

Hadn't even considered Bridge Phil. It's always something that's just sat in my desktop unused - I'll have to have a fiddle with it later.

It's for existing (already exported to a folder) files.

I would just name them sequentially when exporting through lightroom but, at the moment, I assign the files names with a bit of info about the wedding for SEO purposes.

I've always used Bridge in the past. I did toy with scripts etc,. Bridge was the least confusing and simple.

I use a bulk rename utility, as when shooting with two cameras it is handy to rename them in time sequence.

Be aware the user interface isn't intuitive and takes a bit of getting used to, but it is very powerful and once you know what you want to do it is very fast (about 2 - 3 seconds for about 3000 files).

Typically I will remove the first 8 characters of the filenames in a folder (i.e. everything up to .CR2 or .jpg), specify a character prefix of 3 or 4 characters, then use a numeric suffix padded out to 4 or 5 numbers. Then just click on rename and job is done.

I use Advanced Renamer a free download and simple to use, giving lots of options for what type of renaming you want to do.

+1 for Advanced Renamer.

Easy to use and free.
