If you post on facebook you know what I am getting at here. The images look so dull and FB renders them badly. Is there any recommended process that should be applied to an image for it to upload to facebook better?

thanks

What software are you using?

My advice would be to resize to whatever size FB displays them at, but they will still probably knock the quality down anyway.

I wondered about this too - I keep being surprised at the output on both facebook and flickr.

I'm using the sRGB colour pallette since that's supposed to be the more widely used one but I still get differences.

I used CS3 but only recently started using DPP. I thought just resizing them and maybe sharpening them more but wanted to know what other people reccommend.

A friend of mine (professional tog) recommended using the "simple uploader" rather than the batch one. He reckons it was better in some way. It was only yesterday when he told me, so I've not had chance to test his theory. Don't know if it's true or not. Worth a shot, maybe. :)

I send them straight up from Lightroom, simple.

There doesn't seem to be any way of avoiding the dreadful optimisation that facebook implements. Black and whites are definitely the worst but everything gets the going over with the facebook poo stick, softening, loss of contrast, muted colours and sometimes slight pixelation.
If you have a flickr account then post the links or use the flickr box application.

Ive noticed no deteriation on images on Facebook, looks as good as any other site to me.
I always resize all my pictuers to 72 res and decrease the physical size by about a third prior to uploading. I use the simple uploader also.

I just tried the simple uploader with an identical image file which I uploaded to facebook and also to flickr and the result = soft as puddin and a thorough assault on the contrast

Helps if you have decent photos to upload.. ;):p I jest.. I jest.. :D

I've noticed a big degrade in image quality sometimes, and then other times not so bad... I've not set rule for exporting to Facebook though!

Really? Sounds interesting Philius!
To be fair I haven't uploaded anything to facebook (other then the quick test above) for ages, I used to have a few galleries for family etc but got rid of them due to the poor IQ. The BW's are a laugh!

Ditto, except shots from my phone, which are low quality anyway. Any decent shots get uploaded to my Photoshelter account which posts a few thumbnails on my FB wall, which link back to my website.

Not so bad - to my untrained eyes ;)

Bloody awful

The only difference I can spot is that one is my profile pic, one is a fan page.. would that make a difference? I know these 2 in particular were both resized to 640 on the long edge as they were done with a web preset from Lightroom.

I use an Export plugin for Lightroom so I bypass facebook's own uploader - the contrast is the biggest thing that changes for me (I've made sure there's no export presets being applied so it's not that)

Yer, both appear to have that classic facebook fuzz though. I really dunno how they do it.

I am getting content unavailable on the two links above.

There must be something which can be optomised for FB. I certainly resample my pictures down for a start, but not tried changing the DPI not too sure which other settings I should fettle with tbh :)

Personally, I think the only thing that will change facebooks fuzz = is facebook.

I'll stayed tuned here but so far I'm convinced there's 'owt you can do.

You know I see some people accusing Facebook of all sorts of things, one particular chap always blames Facebook for how crap his pictures look, no, its his pictures that are crap, haha !

Anyway, I have never had any problems, exported from LR2 with the 'Export for e-mail' preset and then straight in, they look ok on my 24" screen ?

Facebook is just fine and folk can think my pictures are crap all they want, don't bother me one iota ;), however the optimisation is painfully notable.

EDIT > Just had a butchers at your gallery Ian and the first image in the wedding gallery has the fb 'fuzz' and then looking at the rest, they do too.
