I want to put a small web site together to display some of my nature shots

I can register a domain name ............ xyz.uk NOT .co.uk for £2 and then get a basic hosting package for up to £5 a month .......... I can do that bit

but if I want to put a small web site on this domain, what to I do ......... get a templates one from the "hosting company" £10 upwards ......... get a free one like Wordpress or ?

Then how do I get it onto the web site ............ in the past, years ago, I used GoLive, played around off line and then FTPed the stuff to the site

Just want the easiest solution ....... can anyone advise please

First off, for the sake of £20/year for basic hosting and .UK domain use a decent hosting company like tso.

Then download whatever free Wordpress (or other) template and FTP it across.

not sure if this is different from what I indicated - is it - can you explain further?

You'll need software like Dreamweaver or NVU (http://www.nvu.com/) which is free. Dreamweaver has its own ftp client, but you can get free or cheap ftp and do it that way. However, if you need to buy dreamweaver, weigh up the costs/benefits. Have you much experience of working with code? That will have changed dramatically since GoLive days. Decide first what you really want the site to do. If its just share a few pictures, then maybe use Flickr. If you want to promote yourself and present a more professional image, then it may be worth spending some dosh.

Thanks - I just want an easy "self" web site to post my Bird and Dragonfly images - I used to have a Flickr PRO account but I changed it when they amended the Layout

I have tried ipernity …….. but again I do not think that it is for me

I will register a domain and then use Wordpress

Thanks All for your comments

Isn't Flicker, photobox or smugmug the easiest option for you from what you say? or do you want your own simple website? I am a bit lost at what you actually want.

I use a free Weebly site. lots of templates and tools built in.

I would:
  • Buy my domain name separately from my web hosting
  • Use someone well known for web hosting like TSO. I use unlimitedwebhosting who are OK @£3.30/month, but they do seem to pack lots of websites onto their machines so they can be a bit slow at times. Having said that, I can run as many web sites as I like, host as many domains as I like and have unlimited bandwidth/disk space/emails.
  • Use Wordpress or other CMS (Content Management System). The days of hand crafting your own websites through tools like Dreamweaver are long behind us (thank goodness). I haven't found anything you can't do with a little tinkering with Wordpress. All hosting companies will have a 1-click Wordpress install somewhere....
  • Work on search engine optimisation if you want it to appear in searches.
  • Plan on doing a few iterations of whatever site you do put together - the first site will inevitably be very crude as you learn how your CMS system works and what plugins are available.
  • Plan on spending 5x as long as you initially think it will take you ;)
  • Enjoy the process...

Good luck!

Thanks All
I have registered a domain, have used TSO and Wordpress
Templates good, lots of flexibility, (not stuck with the Flickr etc., layouts which I do not like), can do a blog etc., if needed

Interesting exercise to get to know simple website construction and for trying to put something creative together but as said …….. it will almost become a full time learning experience
