Hello everyone, hope youre all okay.

Ive recently had a thread as i dropped my Nikon 18-55mm lens and killed it off :(

However, ive decided what I think I want to do... but want some advice that im not wasting money on lenses that do similar functions.

Im an amateur in every sense of the word, bu got to start somewhere! So im taking this opportunity to try and move around in terms of lenses and break away from the kit lenses if possible.

Ive got a Nikon D3000 (with no intention of changing the body at this stage).

Ive been looking at the Nikon AF-S 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR DX from ParkCameras @ £194.00 (http://www.parkcameras.com/9997/Nikon-AF-S-18-105mm-f-3-5-5-6G-ED-VR-DX--White-Box-.html) and think this will be a great step up from the 18-55 but also enough to satisfy what I need in terms of length without needing the Tamron monster lens I also got with my kit (hoping to maybe sell this).

However, I also enjoy shooting landscapes and really wanted a wide angle lens.
So as well as the Nikon 18-105 ive also been looking at this one from Jessops.

Nikon 28mm f2.8 AF D
http://www.jessops.com/online.store/products/24148/show.html

Would this lens be a good wide angle lens for an amateur trying to get better, or does it do the same function as the 18-105 and id be wasting money?

Im not looking to spend top money on a lens. Id be happy with just the 18-105mm,but if i can get a wide angle lens from Jessops, i could apply for their 10 month 0% finance and get the wide angle + UV, a polarising filter for the 18-105mm and a couple of protective bags. Thats my thinking anyways.

Hope that makes sense, thanks in advance for any advice given.

Marc

28mm will not be very wide on your camera, your kit lens was 18mm which is much wider. I personally see no point to this lens for you. To go wider than 18mm you'll need something in the 10-20mm sort of range.

Dunno about the merits of a 18-105mm over a 18-50mm with regards image quality, although one obviously gives greater zoom.

Have you thought about getting a 18-50mm f2.8?

After reading all the positive reports on this forum, I'm still evaluating a new Tamron 17-50mm (non-VC) bought from Amazon for £309.

Early indications are good. Not sure how the price compares with a Nik prime (seems to be better than my Nik 24mm f/2.8).

1. Nikon 18-105 is wider at short end than 28mm (18 mm < 28mm).
2. Keep in mind that Nikon 28mm f2.8 AF D will not autofocus on your body

Thank you for the replies.

Goimg to make myself look a right fool here. Ah well.

I didnt realise that 18 was wider than 28 :cuckoo:

Hmm, looking at the Sigma 18-50mm f2.8-4.5 on ParkCameras, would this be a sharper lens than the 18-55 Nikon kit lens?

Obviously im going to need auto focus whilst weening myself off it

you would be better off looking at the tamron 17-50mm f2.8 non VR

Thanks for throwing that lens into the mix.

Looks a nice piece of kit, expensive though! Hmm

Ive had a different idea

Im going to go for the Nikon 18-105mm lens as I think this will be a great walk around lens for me to continue developing with.

Going on what people have said, I assume this will be wide enough for landscape shots which i enjoy shooting.

What I also enjoy playing with is macro. So can anyone advise on what would be an ideal macro lens to be looking at?
Or would I again be wasting my money on lenses that work the same?

Sorry if im going round in circles :(
