Yes
We are thinking of getting a family friend a tablet as he needs internet access.
There is an open network where he lives, and he wants to be able to do some very basic word processing then print documents off (just a few letters, nothing more). He also wants something very portable as he spends a lot of his time out. His eyesight means a phone wouldn't be much good so and 7" screen is just about OK though a 10" one would be better.
We don't have a lot of money to spend on this but could go to about £150 which I guess makes thinks tricky.
So, is there a solution, or would a netbook or even S/H laptop be a better idea ?
Any thoughts much appreciated !

Samsung galaxy tab 2 7" fits the budget perfectly not sure on the word processing but google is your friend

I'm on my tab 2 writing this now and I love it

Just checked you can get an app called office 2012 textmaker which uses word files etc so should be fine

Again just check on printing

Thanks for the replies DTS - Google may be my friend but clearly we are not having a good day today as I can't seem to find a clear answer.....
Certainly the 7" Galaxy seems to be the one getting raved about though !

There is apparently and app called printer share that allows you to print onto a wireless printer that's connected to the network

Hope that helps!

Is the Samsung £ 50 cashback on a Galaxy Tab 2 10" still on?

It depends on the quantity of typing required - on my Galaxy Tab 2, the on screen keyboard takes up about half the screen in landscape mode (bigger keys), and 1/3rd in portrait (small keys). The bigger keyboard is better suited for typing longer pieces, rather than picking out a few words for a google search.

I'm sure the proportions are different on the 10" models, but it may be worth looking at Netbooks. I know they're not trendy, but they may be better for your friends needs if its his sole item of technology.

I don't know, but at about £475 even £50 off still puts it way out of reach...

Hmm, that sounds slightly better...!
Still waiting to find out if he wants to print much as it does seem like a bit of a hassle, and he is (like me) not too much of a computer whizz..
I am beginning to think that a netbook may be a better option - there is one with XP for sale here on TP but even Tesco have refurbished ones at £160 or so with W7 which may last him slightly longer.

As said above, probably best if its the only piece of tech he will use

Best tablet for typing

Though personally I agree with the comments above, you're much better off with something with a physical keyboard if word processing is going to be the main use

I do appreciate all the help being offered - Thanks !
As the guy has lived abroad for many years where a tv remote was as high tech as he got he has little idea of what he will be doing on a device - A netbook is looking more likely to me now - maybe I should start a new thread asking about them...!

Just before Christmas they were deals about that after cashback meant a 10" was about £ 160. This is for the Galaxy Tab 2 10" and not the Galaxy Note which is a newer product.
