Hi everyone,

Fairly new to photography, and my brother in law and his wife had a baby. Cut long story short I just want to take few picture of all them. I've only got a Nikon d3100 kit lens and 55-200mm. They live in a flat has plenty of natral light so it should be ok. I just wanted a few tips to get best out the gear I've got.

Hello Jamie. Welcome to the forum, shame no-one has contributed. If it were me, I'd get (probably make) a reflector or two and use the natural light (what there is at this time of year!) Place them at an angle to the window and use the reflector(s) for fill light.

You can make some cheap reflectors by buying a couple of A3 form core board sheets and spry mounting some silver foil onto the surface. Doesn't matter if it isn't mirror smooth (probably impossible) but they work a treat and if you don't have any spare hands, prop them up.

Like Carol says, try to work with the natural light and some ad-hoc reflectors. Don't complicate things, a simple uncluttered background is important, as is separation from the background (either distance or light).
 
A white sheet or card for reflective light and a black sheet or card for negative fill (used to add more contrast)

Work by the window and you will get the best light. It it's a harsh bright day, maybe defuse the light by placing a sheet over the window, this usually cuts it down by a stop or two :-)
