I've currently got a 400D coupled with a Sunpak PF30x flash (and usually a nifty fifty) - and I use an off-camera hotshot cable to link them up. I'd like to try a very simple lighting setup, and experiment with a cheap soft box which will accommodate the hotshoe flash. The problem I have discovered is that whilst the Sunpak is great, it doesn't seem to be compatible with inexpensive wireless triggers (I Googled it to check) - I figure I'll need to use a wireless trigger if the flash is sitting at the back of the soft box, so I'll need to upgrade my flash as a result.

My question is, what would be a decent flash setup (ie. flash, trigger and hotshoe-compatible softbox) that won't cost the earth? I've not got the budget for pocket wizards etc., I'm looking for a setup that would let me experiment with the soft box (portraits), before building a better kit setup later if I need to.

Many thanks, Simon

Do you need it to be ttl or not? manual Yongnuo flash 40-50 and around £20 for a set of RF603C triggers and you're good to go. If you get the YN-560 mk3 flash you only need one trigger for the camera. You also don't HAVE to have a hotshoe compatible softbox you can get speedlight adapter brackets to suit most fittings.

Sorry should have read the post properly I see now that your'e not looking for another flash. The RF 603 triggers should work all they are doing is firing the flash although you will lose the ttl ability of the flash

Yongnuo 568 Mk III and a 602 trigger. The flash is about 45 quid new and has a wireless receiver built in. I have 2 to make a basic lighting set up with a couple stands (the foot mount the flash comes with is threaded so you can also use a normal tripod) and a shoot thru umbrella. Seems a pretty great cheap setup so far!

Don't you mean YN560III? That has wireless built in but the YN568 doesn't.
