Yes
I am going to be buing a 5d2 tomorrow from Jessops, and was wondering what they are like with bartering.

I am looking to get a Decent Card thrown in, such as a 8 or 16gb Sandisk.

What are they like with this kind of bartering? Just wondered if anyone had done this successfully?

Not interested in any Jessops bashing, price is only tenner more than best on camera price buster, and have no need to rely on staff apart from for the bartering.

Cheers in advance everyone.

I guess it depends on the shop and staff you're dealing with, their margins are very slim but they might be in need of the turnover more. It never hurts to try.

Had no luck whatsoever and I went for a memory card too

Fair enough if that's the price, but worst that can happen is getting a knock back, so have a try and good luck

Check out the price from Kerso on here first I got my 50D from him and good price and fast service as well

went in on a Saturday to see if they would price match a nikon SB600 flash. Internet had it for £169 Jessops £239 they offered to match their own website but could not do anymore because the manager did not work on a Saturday (WTF). So good luck.

Good Luck, and if you do get a bartered discount, can you do my shopping at Tesco on Saturday for me and get them to drop some prices or give me a free loaf :)

Ding76uk: I take it you're off to Lincoln/ Grimsby then? As there's no Jessops in Skegness

Lincoln are usually good with bartering, managed a few good deals from them myself :)

I would agree, most groups have fixed policies and the staff will only adhere to that. If their policy is to match internet prices then spend an hour looking round for the best internet price on the camera and the memory card and go with them.

Jessops will only match High Street prices, no internet prices, unless it's a high streets website, such as Currys, Comet, etc.

Best thing you could do would be to get to Currys and try to get them to give you a good written quote and try it at Jessops. But they are sometimes good with bartering, but with memory cards being classed as Hardware, they are less likely to give you discount opposed to if you purchased a case, bag, accessories, etc.

Jessosps in Leicester always do what they can to satsfy your haggling needs whether it money off or a freebie thrown in, or a heavily reduced memory card/filter etc.. when bought with.. I really rate the Leicester store, Leicester Jacobs is decent too but youll get a better service in Jessops.

I agree Leicester Jessops is a really good store.
The one on Peterborough price matched my 70-200 when I bought it. Jacobs were selling them over £100 cheaper at the time.

When are you thinking of going?

EDIT: Just read you're going tomorrow. :(

If you're not already a member of TopCashBack then join them first and then go to the Jessops site via TopCashBack to reserve online for collection in store and you will get cash back worth a few % (currently 4% of the price before VAT). That should be worth almost £58.

Yeah well am trying Boston store, as they have one in stock, if it is one in cabinet will have more string to my bow. Fingers crossed. Not sure I will get something, but hell I will give it a shot.

I don't mean to be pedantic.... ok well I do :D

bartering is an exchange of goods and/or services, not trying to get a discount

That's simply not true. They will match reputable internet retailer prices, but it does depend on how you approach it and if the manager is in a discounting mood!

Yes they do barter, I have had sucsess with my local branch every time I have been in.

It's called Haggling where I come from! But does it matter if you get something knocked of? (the price I mean!)

My local branch said that they didn't do price matching with Amazon and they also no longer had a deal in place to supply Panasonic products (I was shopping around for a GF1 at the time).

I used to live in Worcester where they price matched with Amazon on a Canon IXUS 40 and knocked about £50 off asking at the time.

It definitely seems to vary branch-to-branch.

I managed to get £10 or so knocked off the price of a nifty fifty from Jessops by asking them to price match Calumet. I had £40 of vouchers burning a hole in my pocket and wanted to use them up as I had a sneaky feeling that they might go under (It was just after Zavvi went under and left people with worthless gift vouchers).

Anyway, no harm in asking (if you don't ask, you don't get) and if you're buying a 5d2 there's got to be a bit of scope for a few extras.

I prefer to call it meaningful negotiation. Of course this does always reflect upon it being meaningful to both parties.

Always worth trying, my wife hates me doing it but loves the result I get.

I couldn't go for a price match when I got my 5d2 from there, because with the offer that was on at the time, plus the discount code, I think it was the cheapest you could possibly get brand new on the high street.

I DID, however, try and wangle a memory card, with no luck, and then a circular polariser, with still no luck. The manager who was there said that they simply couldn't, because at the price I was paying they were making a loss.

Whether that was true or not, I dunno, but I just left it at that.

My take on this is "shy bairnes get nowt"

If ya divent ask ye get nowt/

well done mate

I bought a Nikon D90 + 18-105 VR for my girlfriend today and two different Jessops (a short story to explain that one) agreed to match the best on-line price which was Warehouse Express. No hassle, they just checked the price on-line and matched it saving £55.

bought my D300 from currys ,because jessops would,nt come down 5 quid
"you wont get it cheaper any where else" she said WRONG

Jessops will not discount DSLR's when using the likes of topcashback or quidco, you need to check the t&c's before placing order.
Tim you were very lucky with your 7D :)

Not true. The Quidco cashback will be paid. What will not be paid is the additional discount that the QUIDOFIVE voucher code will get you at the checkout. You will still get the 4% (of the pre-VAT price). I've been paid Quidco on all my Jessops purchases including my 40D, 1D3, 7D, 2X5D2 and a Sigma lens. Those were all individual purchases dating between September 2007 and November 2009. Two were ordered for home delivery and four were reserved for online pickup. Do you really think I've been lucky six times out of six? It's not luck. It's how it works.

Don't be confused by the statement that QUIDCOFIVE does not work with DSLRs. That bit is true, but it has nothing to do with the normal Quidco cash back.

Here you see the cash back already paid on the 7D and 2X5D2 I bought last year....

That gave me a net cost on the 7D of £1170 inclusive and £1590 each for the 5D2s - for UK stock with full UK warranty etc. etc.. Why pay more?

By the time you read this you would have probably purchased your new camera, but as mentioned earlier there is very little in the way of margin for jessops to be flexible. They have a fixed trade price they can go to, but that is as said.. Trade.
Believe it or not they make very very little money from an SLR sale, which is why they try to push add ons ie memory cards and cases etc.... There is simply more profit to be had selling those than selling an SLR on it's own. So a dealer is not going to give away pure profit now are they?

Tim I don't doubt you in the slightest, even more so from what you told me on Saturday.
It's just that after quidco directs you to the Jessops website, I have always seen this.

I've just noticed 'web exlusive price' :gag:

I got most my first set up there....

I wanted a tamron macro which was out of stock , £340 I think, so they give me the 60mm canon macro for the same price which was set at £380.

Darran,

All the text you refer to is talking about VOUCHERS and DISCOUNTS. Quidco or TopCashBack cash back is not a voucher system, nor a discount. It is a return of COMMISSION for supplying a lead to the retailer.

Of course, these cash back firms never guarantee that the cash back will be paid, but in my experience it has been paid each and every time I have shopped through those cash back sites, not only at Jessops but everywhere I have shopped.

Had a go at haggling in Jessops today... so damn hard round here!

They wouldn't price match on a 50D with the likes of amazon (ive heard so many cases of them matching online prices) nor would they match currys price with a discount code as currys had none in stock. After 10 minutes of trying the best I could get was £20 off 4GB CF cards so got a couple of them... better then nothing I suppose...!
