Yes
Just read the 'what do you do?' thread.

We do have a huge variety of skills outside the 'tog' type.

Could there be room for a space where we may be able to swop for mutual benefit?

Because of the space between us I imagine it would be mostly information. But morephysical help could be forthcoming in time.

Community spirit and all that.:)

I understand where you are coming from, for example I notice StuartH is a plasterer and lives in my county so it makes sense to utilise the skills of people on here.

And HIMUPNORTH is apparently good for a sack of spuds. :D

Well I'm not looking after anyones kids!!!!! I value my sanity. I spend all day trying to hide from my own as it is :D

Bartering is good, I got my new bungalows plumbing, wiring, and fencing done in exchange for turfing 3 gardens.

Well there is (or seems to be ) a large number of techies. and we all need them everynow and then.

We probly have builders, plumbers, sparkies etc.. who would just pass on advice for similar from an accountant, tree surgeon, gardener.

What about (sexist remark coming up) blokes on there own with a laundry problem and girls who cant do somthing (i wont suggest what for fear of loosing my head).

Ooooh, a Tree Surgeon... yes please. Anyone an expert in trees on here...? We have a rather large and growing fir tree right on the front corner of our house and I am scared to cut it down as the roots will then rot and there's obviously a subsequent risk of subsidence.

Any advice from tree surgeons much appreciated. Happy to post pics if need be.

excellent idea . so who is coming round to do my laundry and accounts then ?

The thing that is likely to cause damage to your house is not the roots rotting (they don't as a rule) its the change in the moisure content of the soil under your foundations ajacent to where the tree was removed/killed. If you kill your tree then all the water the tree has been taking out of the ground will stay and make the ground water levels change locally, differentially to the rest of the building.

Does that entitle me to have my laundry done ? or a curry cooked ? huh huh ?

Perhaps we could have a page where we advertise our services\expertise so to speak?

so how does this work then ?
do we do work for others and build up credit points (trade coupons) which we can then use to purchase help from others like a co-operative ?

Mods i feel a new section coming on, very good idea this, we all need tips/help with anything we do

Sorry but it seems like a bad idea to me to formalise something like this. This is a place for leisure or pro activities related to photography. Don't see that peoples other skills are a suitable ongoing topic for a photog forum. Bit too far OOF for me.

spoilsport!

Anyone want some laundry.....my wife is busy cleaning my cameras;)

Afraid I agree with Robert on this one.
If youre looking for something/someone in particular, you can always pop a 'Is there a **** in house' type thread in OOF at any time. :)

I have to agree with Robert.

If you are looking for a local business or tradesman then you could do far worse than check out your local thebestof site. They've now changed the way they work and only promote businesses that have been recommended by the public.

here's a link to one - which just happens to show mine ;)

Yup, tis a nice idea in theory but a potential nightmare in practice.

As Glo said, a simple thread is often all thats needed.

Well I would be quite willing to supply powertools, tooling, abrasives, fixiings ect at trade plus any carriage incurred.
Which will be tons cheaper than B&Q and the likes.

Or I could point you in the right direction for online/local suppliers who would be quite competitive on prices:thumbs:

Anyone need to know what kind of Turbofan Engine is best to fit to there Commercial Aeroplane, for stability, lifespan, service contract and environmental impact, feel free to ask me. :)

I have a 747-400. What would you suggest?

Thanks

Well there is a toughy, the old Rb211-500series has been the popular choice, but, personally id go for a new Trent 700 maybe the Trent768, that way you have more power on tap, so your not giving it full throttle all the time(increase engine life), with no increase to the weight and size, also, the newer engine design is more fuel efficient which has to be good for your carbon footprint. Also the Trent 700 fanblades are much are much easier to handle and dont give me a sore back.

And now in return, I would like to borrow your... Girlfriend, Wife, Sister, Mother or significant other for a photoshoot...

I have to say I also have reservations as to how practical such a proposition would be in practise but my main concern is that this is a completly off topic section which is clearly very popular with members. If we start restricting posts to photography only topics then we may as well do away with this section altogether .In my experience this would have a significant inpact on membership and posts as the majority of folk on forums come primarily for the social interaction .

Don't worry, we won't be restricting the OT section to photography posts :)
It's the creation of a futher specific OT section for the above purpose we think shouldn't be done, that's all :) But we do agree it might be beneficial to members to be able to swap their skillsets with other members, hence if someone needs a particular trade, they can ask in the current OT section :)

My thoughts weren't exactly a new thread advertising 'I can fit a carpet, do you want me to come round', it was more advise and help of other trades/occupations :)

thats a relief. I am a complete novice where photography is concerned so this section gives me the opportunity to post and feel part of the community whilst I learn from all you lot. This forum is a fantastic resource of advice and information.

My skills and procrastination and leaving projects incomplete.

So if you want anything doing, feel free to ask me and in the unlikely event I make a start on something I guarantee I will not finish it.

Michael.

lol I might start my own headstone, and get halfway, and just not finish it :D, and just put at the bottom "Procrastinator"

someone mention cheap power tools?

I'm after a combination chop/table saw to knock off a couple of jobs....ultimate quality isn't that much of an issue :D
