BarrySprout's 52 for 2011 Week 33. Record

Thanks Lynne and Michael. Tina I have passed on to Mrs Sprout that you think she is warped

Wow, is that a record, arn't they antiques :)

Nice idea and well shot, but I see a reflection and I think two finger prints.

Did it go platinum?

Records are getting old but this one seems to go on for ever. (as can be seen on the label)

The reflection is of the top of the light box and was very hard to avoid. But because it was only the strip of cardboard I wasn't too bothered by it.
I spent ages washing the record because it was so filthy and to remove the original label but obviously handled the record pieces a fair bit positioning them. Should have wore gloves. :bonk:

Hiya Colin,

Excellent!!! This has put a smile on my dial :D Very creative and original

Others have beat me to the critique ... i.e., the shadow and reflection. Would it have perhaps helped if you had placed some dark card or material at the top of the lightbox to prevent the reflection on the black vinyl? just a suggestion the thing about for another time.

Well done though, this has to be one of my favs for the week.

Cheers

Dawn :)

Thanks very much Dawn, really appreciate that. You may well be onto something with the black card. Had a quick try at sorting the shadow at the bottom earlier but I was just making it worse. So if I get a chance tomorrow I will try a reshoot with black card in place.

What an amazing shot. Original and funny. You've set a standard for us to follow.

Cheers Patrick. Apparently I picked Mrs Sprout up wrong and she didn't in fact think my idea was good. She has suggested I stick my camera where the sun don't shine. I pointed out that we already live in Scotland but she soon explained where she meant. Still trying to figure out how to get the pop up flash to work.

Cor you lot are harsh the only way to take reflection off a bit of vinyl is to shoot it in pitch black without lighting

We are all cruel to be kind in the 52 gang. At least I hope that's the case.

The light reflections I don't mind, but there is a line in the top left section which is slightly distracting as the rest of the record is fine. I know glass is difficult with reflections, but I wasn't sure about this.

Either way I still ike the shot and think it's a great idea.

Not had the chance today to reshoot the record. Mainly due to Mrs Sprout yabbering on again. Blah blah blah, you never listen, blah blah.
However, one thing I did pick up on while she was going on was that she has been trying to find an Ipod app with a convincing joke broken screen. Apparently all the ones she tried didn't look real.
So to prove I do listen and care I have spent some time while she is out preparing a surprise for her
Think she will pleased, I hope so anyway.

Hiya Colin

Talk about making a point ;)

Another fab photo from you ... how the hell am I going to compete this week? I am having endless problems with my computer and can't do what I want .... so I may have to take a back seat this week and just post pics of broken for the sake of keeping up to date. I am so frustrated!!!!

At least some folk are keeping the creativity and imagination alight this week.

Love looking at your pics, which are inspiring .... yet annoying because I can't be as creative as I want to be :bonk:

Cheers

Dawn :)

Does it still work??

;)

That's a great take on the theme.

OMG, just see the photograph's name "Withnail and I...pod"...chuffin heelarious!!

Thanks Dawn, I did actually try another shot using a dark card in the top of my lightbox but I still wasn't 100% happy withit.

Maybe you should just take a pic of your pc this week?

Hmmm, yes, that looks broken; convincing too

Thanks Tina, nearly hammered my finger in preparation for this one. Also managed to cut my finger on a shard of glass.

Does it still work??

;)

The ipod had expired a few months ago when I dropped it in the toilet. Ipood! Kept a hold of it because I knew I could use it for a shot at some point.

Title popped into my head as I was uploading it, glad you noticed and appreciated it.

i think i might be married to the same women hmmm might go and check the hall of records just to make sure. I have to say as an HTC man i love that pic, got a thing against iphones still sort of cringing as i look at it though

I have been thinking of that ... it is driving me insane ....!!!!

However, I have been working on a 'work-around' to try to not let computer problems get in the way .... but I do think this week will be weak from my part.

I am very late in posting this week .... but that is beyond my control.

Anyhow ... I am enjoying seeing what everyone else is posting this week :D

Cheers

Dawn :)

well done brill one of the best yet
well shot
well thought out

Thanks everyone. Kind comments almost make up for the loss of a £300 ipod. Aside......not really.

Bright Spark by barrysprout, on Flickr

Lesson in lighting again for me this week. I've had various comments in the past regarding reflections in some of my shots. So rather than avoid shiny objects I thought this week I would use a nice shiny lighter. Tried my best to control the light and reflections on the lighter, which I am happy with. The reflection of the lighter in the wood was brighter than I intended but to get enough light on the lighter I had one of the flashguns quite close to it and angled down.

The lighting appears to be even across each surface with no unwanted reflections.
The fading in and out of the lighting (not sure if that's the right term) gives dimension - especially the right hand edge.

The detail is great, it's even better when the large size is viewed on flickr.

The reflection on the table looks fine to me, ie not too bright.

The black background works well as does the base.

Now for the spark, excellent and well captured. I love the way the flint is flying off. Tell me it's the actual flint and not some clever PP work.

My only comment is that I'd prefer more of a downward shot so we can see more of the spark at it's base.

Over all I like it, but you have to tell us how it was done - has some ones finger been PP out?

Thanks Neil,
I tried to set up the two strobes to get the edges defined. The background is actually the livingroom, ie no background but the shot was at f22 to make sure only what I wanted was exposed.
Two shots were combined for the final image, one with the setup as above and the lighter propped open with a paperclip and one with me sparking the lighter but no strobes used.

What a neat shot. Really clever and imaginative. Very well executed. Thanks for explanation as on how you did it.

Perfect for the theme. The lighting and reflections are good.

I would prefer to be able to see the whole pic on my screen without scrolling up/down.

Good shot

Patrick you need to get a better screen or change your resolution. :D

Neil, I meant to mention earlier that my initial shot was taken at a slight angle downwards. The problem was that the converging lines were making the lighter look warped and when I tried to correct it I was losing the bottom of the lighter from the shot. So rather than lots of cloning and messing about in pp, I reshot from a lower level. That way i kept the processing to a minimum.

Very clever and looks much better via Flickr (gray background).

I looked with and without reflection and you made the right choice.

(btw, your horizon's off....;))

You can see the horizon?? :)

Well spotted, to make sure the lighter didn't move between shots I used sticky tabs to hold it in place and they made the lighter lean slightly. Obviously when I straightened in pp it threw the table off horizontal. Nearly got away with it though.

Very cool shot. A lot of effort gone into this. I agree that a higher angle might have been even better though and maybe the lighter a bit lower in the frame. Well done though. Excellent image.

Thanks Tina, I did try hard this week and I'm glad it's been well received so far.

Hiya Colin,

Excellent shot for this week  Love the way you have captured the sparks and yet maintained control of the lighting of the rest of the image.

Only thing I am not sure about is the reflection of the lighter which I find slightly distracting ... but the more I look at it the more I get use to it (if that makes sense).

BTW I like the lighter .... :D

Well done

Cheers

Dawn :)

Thanks Dawn, the reflection was the only thing that bothered me too.

Hi Colin

time for a catch up on your thread as I'm a little behind...SORRY :'(

bright...LOVE IT:clap: You caught the sparks so well , the reflection is just right ( reality has reflections!) , great lighting & even that it's slightly tilted down to the right doesn't really bother me .& yet again , more than a touch green-eyed at HOW you did it

Broken...bang on theme & what an end for an iPod ...love the title as well

Great work as always ,& though I'm generally late posting on others threads I really enjoy seeing what you come up with

I'm a BlackBerry man myself, but I share your problem with iphones. I can't stand Apple.

Great pic, but an even better name!

Not had great opportunities this week for the theme but I was at a Donkey sanctuary in Ireland the other day where they do great work rescuing donkeys.

Also not had time to comment or even look through everyone else's threads so my apologies for this and will try to catch up when I'm home again.

Like it. Great sky with detail; the composition works really well, especially the ears in the clouds; the perspective is spot on for me, as well; eye contact; touch of colour with the yellow; detail in the hair; I can live with the turds...:D

Well done... one of the better Rescues I've seen.

Cheers.

I really like that donkey shot. It looks really nice, light and friendly, as does the donkey :D

The only thing that bugs me is the haloing around the ears. I'm never quite sure what causes that, but I had that happen when I was processing one of my photos the other day.

Hiya Colin,

Wow this is great and probably one of the weirdest photos I have seen in a while.

It's almost like the donkey is saying 'I have my eye on you'

Great how you have captured a sort of 3D effect, and makes it even more freakier is the way the hind part of the donkey is not visible ... like it is half a donkey :suspect:

Well done, I really like this shot for its quirkiness, but more so for the fact that it is a Rescue donkey ... I am sure the sanctuary are doing fantastic work there in Ireland.

Enjoy your jollies, travel safe and catch up with you soon.

Take care

Cheers

Dawn :)

i just assumed the poor creature had no back legs... :'(

..and was balancing out with a big head..

ironically i have just been reading up about this very effect, of being close to the subject and the abnormality seen here occuring.. fascinating

love the sky and what looks like rain drops on the lens, top right... maybe its me..and too much cooking sherry!!
