Off there for the testing at the end of feb start of march.

Any one recommend any good stands to go please.

From what i no about the track i was thinking the eurocar bend end with the slow chicane just before the pit straight.

Hopefully the weather will hold out.

Hopefully will get some time in the city as well which will be good.

Mrs aint happy as she aint going oh well

Please take me!? Haha

I hoping to be an F1 photographer one day :)

I'm not sure about spots, but if you have twitter, look for @F1Photographer (Darren Heath) he might be able to help you :)

Good luck and have fun!

Natalie

lol sorry no room in the suitcase.

ill have a look on twitter for him thanks for the info

The main grandstand opposite the pits is very tall and lets you shoot over the fencing, and into the pits.
The grandstands at the end of the pit straight too are very good for the head-on shots. Or some panning as the cars quickly enter the right/left and go away up the hill.
Around the back of the circuit, the spectator banking is built quite high. So it's probably one of the better tracks for photographers. Even easier for testing when the crowds are much thinner.

Thanks for the reply. I looked at their website and it tells you what stands where open last year and I think it was only 4 stands open which I think you have mentioned in your reply. Hopefully it will be bright enough to use my sigma 150 -500

Great track for attending F1 testing, I've been 2 out of last 3 years (with Jerez in between) and am going again this year on 22/23rd Feb.
No problems with weather when I've been, but it's a cross-fingers job regardless.
Attendance figures seem to have risen since I've been going, perhaps it's the Alonso-at-Ferrari factor but also increased numbers of people going armed with cameras and hefty lenses.

No stands open on the inside of the track for general admission ticket (think it was €12 last year), they're all on the outside.

The entire main covered stand opposite the pits is open, so good vantage for that plus the practice starts on the grid that they do at the end of the first session before the lunch break and at the end of the day. Well worth it as the drivers sometimes give a wave to the fans.

Going clockwise around the track based on my previous trips (and assuming all stands are open as they were):
Turn one - open stands and you can get quite high up to see the braking zone and rear shots as they go up the hill through turn 2.
Turn three - there is banking on the outside of turn 3 which allows shots over the fence in parts as they run flat through here onto the short straight to turn 4. Interesting light early in the morning, especially if the track is damp.
Turn 4 – lots of people congregate here as it’s a 180o turn, fence tends to be bit high to shoot over though
Turn 5 – the hill is way above the track here, so good shots looking down as they accelerate out of this turn. Good for panning.
Turn 7 – you’re high above here as per turn 5, good for panning through the apex and the odd tyre smoke from a wheel lockup if you’re lucky
Turn 9 – stand is open here but I’ve never found it especially an especially interesting viewpoint
Between 9 and 10 – my favourite part of the track, a real elevated viewpoint so great for panning if up high and getting the exit out of turn 9 if down low towards the fence
Turns 12/13 – open seating here, the ‘right-hand’ end of the stand (towards turn 11) is popular for the head-on shot coming out of 10 and kink that is turn 11. Need long lens for that though
Turn 14/15 chicane – one of the open stands here is available, but better standing on the bank towards the pit entry to get head-ons of the chicane entry/exit
Turn 16 – the pit straight entry is poor for pics as you’re shooting through the fence.

A lot of people seem to gravitate between turn 12 and the main stand, I tend to start going clockwise in the morning and make my way around, having said that it’s never ‘busy’.

Not sure if you’ve been to testing before but if you haven’t don’t necessarily expect to see cars in close proximity on the track as it’s a rarity; they all run their separate programmes and often disappear for hours at a time depending on problems that may arise.

Oh, take earplugs!

I’ve taken my 80-200mm 2.8 (1.5 crop on D300) previously, also used a 1.4tc last year but not overly happy with slight softness. Looking at the images from last year most shots were taken at the long end of that combo so will be hiring a 300mm f4 for this year.

Easy to get to track from central Barcelona, about 30mins on the train and then about 25 mins walk from Montmelo station.

Hope this helps, any other questions just ask

Dave

sorry i missed your reply Dave for some reason.

Thanks for taking the time for more info. I went to Valencia for testing last year loved it only issue was got turned away with my mono pod.

First time to the track and the city so we are going to the track on the Friday and spending the rest of the time in the city and surrounding.

Ear plugs stupidly have never worn them to a Motorsport event guess i like the noise so much. (yes i no it will be bad for me at some point later in my life.

DJguru,

That is some fantastic information you've provided here! I thought only the pit straight and final sector were open for picture taking, or is that just grandstands? I hope it's just the grandstands that are shut and not entire sections!

I'm going to the F1 tests from 1st-4th March, going with another photography buddy, staying nearby.

I've taken shots at Silverstone like 5 times now, getting a bit bored, need a change in landscape for F1 photos!

I've got a Canon 1d MKIII and a 300mm 2.8 lens with a 2 x converter, I don't think I'll need more than that. Also gonna take a 7D with a 24-70 Sigma lens for the more atmosphere shots!

We'l see what happens, I'm soo excited, shame you're not going to be there at the same time!!

Ok, back from last weeks testing and just a few comments on changes since last year.

An infield spectator section between turns 1 and 5 was open last week, it's accessible via the overtrack footbridge at turn 5 marked 'members only' but there was no restriction of the sort, gave a good view of the end of the pit straight into turn 1.

The general admission grassy bank at the turn 14/15 chicane has now been fenced off so the close-ups previously available here are no more, need to shoot the chicane head on from the stands at the pitlane entry (for which a 300mm with tc is required)

The 300mm f4 I hired was the bees-knees but fI did find it about 20-50mm too long in some spots to get entire cars in frame whilst panning, needed to get creative to overcome that one!

Enjoy yourself!

Had a great time didn't take my monopod after hassle at valencia last year. Different story there thou wish I had taken the gamble ill remember for next year thou. Great track for viewing on testing
