Bit of a dicey post here, but does anyone else find it bizarre that Mr Obama, commander in chief of the USA's military forces, with 200,000 or so troops currently fighting wars in two foreign countries, has been awarded the nobel peace prize?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/8299824.stm

I don't set out to offend anyone with this post, just genuinely interested on peoples thoughts and feelings on this.

:shrug::thinking:

I find it a bit odd.
I wish him well, and he makes all the right noises (but then he is a politician so he would) But he hasn't actually done much yet. I'll reserve judgement until he does...

The prize was probably awarded based on intent rather than what he has achieved so far. The two wars were not of his doing, but happens to have taken over given that he is now President. I'm glad he was awarded the prize because it now means there is more pressure than ever on him to stick to the promises that made him President.

Let him who desires peace prepare for war.

Bizarre. President Obama hasn't been in office for a year yet, and hasn't achieved anything noticeable, let alone making a remarkable contribution to peace.

I like the fact he was nominated just two weeks after coming to power. Now that's foresight.....

So the scientists bombing the moon, or them lot in Switzerland with the LHC didnt make the grade then:lol:

The nobel peace price has now lost it´s importance and meaning. It was a great day in american history when Obama became the first black president and also it was strange that the whole world celebrated his election although nothing big has changed yet. Maybe the comitee was influenced by that euphoria.
Obama promised many things and will have to proof, like every other politician, that he sticks to his words and is able to fullfill his promises. The nobel price has lost it´s importance through this media and emotion influenced vote.

A bit of an over statement in my opinion. You do know that there are multiple prizes right? And that the Peace Prize is only one of those ? Also given that the prize is administered by the foundation in Sweden, one of the most neutral countries on the planet, I'd like to believe their integrity over anyone else.

Like I said in my first post, the prize is most likely based on intent rather than what he has achieved so far.

It's strange how so many people are up in arms over this, yet if you asked them who won the Peace prize the year before they can't even tell you. Now that's media influence.

If you'd met him as I have, you'd know why...

The 'wars' his country is engaged in are not wars: Iraq is a mentoring operation combined with a minor insurgency - now mainly quashed by the Iraqis themselves with our support and guidance. Obama has committed to pulling out of Iraq as soon as is possible - we have to respect the wishes of the Iraqi government that we support - they do not wish us to leave until the Iraqi Security Forces have the ability to operate unsupervised...
All British combat forces have re-deployed out of theatre and the US is scaling its own involvement down drastically...Troop levels may appear to be the same but they are no longer all combat troops - they are logistics, transport and mentoring teams...

As to Afghanistan - no sensible person can argue that we should walk away from what was started nearly eight years ago...
The insurgency in the South resulted from outside calls to interdict the Opium trade which was thriving now that the Taleban no longer held sway... Since the insurgency in Iraq failed so miserably, many of those fighters are now here in Afghanistan - especially the bomb-makers and training cadres - Iraqis, Iranians, even Czech nationals have been implicated in this - there are roving Training Teams - just like our own mentoring teams - who supply and train the local Taleban forces...
Anyone who does not think this is a global conflict fought in a small arena is patently deluding themselves...or naive - or just plain stupid.

Obama inherited these conflicts from the previous administration and now has to find an honourable way to disengage while doing the least harm to the two countries concerned - in the case of Afghanistan that means we will be here for the forseeable future...
