I hope you'll forgive my ignorance, but I've never done any internet trading before. Just out of curiosity, I was looking at some of the items for sale on here and some state "payment by bank transfer". Does this mean once I have the sellers' account number, I can pop into my bank with the details and the money would be transfered into that account right away? Or is there a bit more to it than that?

It's just in case I find anything for sale that catches my eye, so to speak.

Thanks very much.

Carl.

yes thats it Carl, I've done it once on the forums but I have internet banking and as long as you have the name of the bank, the name, account number and sort code you can just transfer the money over.

Yes you could pop into your bank or if you have internet banking do it at home, only info needed is account number, sort code and name.

Thank you Vicky for your very quick reply. Much appreciated.

Thank you. I don't have internet banking at present, so I was hoping I could do it face to face at my bank. Cheers.

I've used it a few times on here, was a little nervous at first but it's quick and simple. :)

PS nice avatar, he is the one and only Mr Holmes

Thanks, he's one of my favourite actors and indeed the best Sherlock. In fact, I pretty much like most of the film adaptations of the stories.

If you have, or can get telephone banking (which can be an add on to your normal arrangement) you could probably speak to a human and do it by phone.

A while ago my local Nat West branch in Northwich gave me their phone number saying I could call them directly (rather than a call centre) if I had any enquiries, so I guess they should be able to transfer money that way. As it happens I'm in Northwich two or three times a week, so it'd be no trouble popping in to the bank.

Thank you for that Dougie.

I suspect that if you initiated such a transaction by calling into your local branch then the funds wouldn't be transferred until that night, at best. It would be worth asking the question when you are there.

With Internet Banking, as long as both your bank and the recipient's bank are part of the FasterPay system, then the transfer is (almost) instantaneous.

You really ought to investigate Internet Banking. Get with the program ;)

Thank you for your information John, that's handy to know. And you're right, it is about time I stepped into the 21st century. I've always been way behind when it comes to technology - in fact I only learnt the basics of using a computer through a series of evening classes about a year ago. I've still much to learn. Perhaps I should change my user-name to Fred Flintstone.

Not so sure about that, Carl.
Usually when you want to conduct business (as opposed to enquiries) via the telephone you need to have the system set up so that when you phone you will have to enter a password and part of a security number on the keypad. Thereafter when you get speaking to someone they may ask security questions.

It's handy to have the phone facility if you don't go near a branch very often, but if you are in the vicinity of your bank regularly it's as well doing face to face business.

Ah, I see what you mean. It sounds like something worth being set up for anyway just in case, even though I may not need it at this moment in time.

Thank you very much for that, I do appreciate your advice.

I find it very handy, but would not want one of those accounts that are telephone.
Telephone service is great if you have something very urgent to attend to.

What even the latest "Indiana Jones" Sherlock :D

Not too sure about that one. I've seen the trailer but that's about it.
I think I'll stick with good old Basil Rathbone or Peter Cushing. ;)

It would be worth your while setting up internet banking with your bank for future use.
I rarely use cash or cheques, and I am ancient.
Most transfers to the same bank are instant and clear at once, and those to others may take a little longer to clear.
All the banks Guarantee the security of your money from account to account.

However it gives no more nor less safety than a cleared cheque. it needs the same trust between buyer and seller.

Many thanks to you Terry for that.

Yes internet banking is the way forward I'd say, but with me being a bit of a dinosaur when it comes to computers, I always think there's something that can go wrong. I dare say I'm worrying needlessly, but I'll certainly take a look at that. Cheers.
