Hi

How do you do a bank transfer?:)

Many thanks.

Lisa

You log onto your internet bank and click "make a payment" - some banks will also let you do it over the phone.

First you need to have internet banking set up for your account. Then you just follow the instructions on the screen. Or go to your bank and do it at the counter with the account and sort code info!

You need the recipients account name, account number and sort code iirc.

Thank you. I'm not set up for internet banking. I'll have to do it over the phone if they allow it, or pop into the bank.

Lisa

If you're going into the bank just fill in the paying in slip with the other person's details instead of your own and hand over cheque/cash.

Many of us do BT. It may be easier if you tell us what bank you are hoping to do this with...we could let you know how the menus are for that particular site. ( assuming you want to do BT via web).

I'm with RBS and need to use a card reader to generate a code in order to set up a payee online. It's really safe because I can never find my card reader! :D

I'm with first direct its real easy

with sort code
account no
and name

you can either phone up [hey answer the phone first ring no menus]and do it
or log on and do it

Thanks, it's all sorted, I'm going into the bank tomorrow to do it.

Lisa

The fastest way is to go into their bank and deposit the cash. Although I've noticed normal transfers are going through same-day with RBS (not sure about other banks) but it may be only for businesses and not personal.

Almost all the banks (except abby national / nationwide etc) will account the money within 2 hours after transfering, which is a great thing!

If you don't have internet banking, you can request other forum members to do on behalf of you (ofcourse trust counts) which happens in many other forums these days.

If I can't walk into a bank to do it I won't BT as in my first purchase the seller was online bank, first direct I think,
I tried to do a BT through The TSB and was told it'll cost you £30

No thanks I said and sent a cheque, but I think First Direct are run by HBSC
? so can nip in there.

We are tending to use BTs on here due to the charges from Paypal but just a reminder that if you send a payment by paypal and select GIFT then there is no charge. Sometimes this can work out as a better and quicker alternative especially when the sender does not have internet banking.

Hi

I looked into that but it says there is a fee and either the sender or recipient has to pay it.

No the "send to private individual as a gift" option does not involve any fees at all. This is the method I ask people to use when they are registering for the TP Script Writer scripts. I get the full amount and they are charged that same amount. If it is done normally there is a 54p charge out of the £10

My only concern with bank transfers is how do you get the money back if the person you're buying from is dodgy and tries to rip you off? I mean you'll have the receipt from the deposit but what then? I suppose the bank can chase it up some how but they're not just going to hand over XXX quid from someone else's bank account.

It becomes a matter for the police! This is a concern especially on a forum like this where some very expensive items are changing hands. Yes it is not too bad when you are buying a filter from a member with a thousand posts but it would be very worrying buying a D3x from someone who has been a member 5 weeks and has 100 posts if you see what I mean. Paypal is safer but even that is not completely safe. The iTrader addition is a help too.

I am just a bit worried that someone IS going to get ripped off for a lot of money at some point.

Seriously though.

NEVER send ANYTHING to Nigera EVER.
Always go into your own paypal account using www.paypal.com in your browser DO NOT CLICK ON THEIR LINK (I have seen these faked too).
Always add to your listing that you will not send to NON CONFIRMED ADDRESSES and STICK TO IT!!
Do not worry about threatening emails from paypal they do not send any!
Ignore any emails from paypal saying they are holding funds until you send proof of postage.
If in ANY doubt do NOTHING.
NEVER refund money unless it is by the REFUND bit in paypal.
If someone pays you using a stolen credit card it will all appear correct but then paypal will take the money back off you two weeks later.

I read somewhere that this is only when the paypal account is drawn on a bank account not on a credit card, which in a way does make sense.

I'm with Lloyds TSB and only last week used them to do a BT didn't cost me a penny (did it online).

"NEVER send ANYTHING to Nigera EVER"

Can you have a word with my boss, he keeps insisting on sending me!!!:cuckoo:

Getting back to the BT issue, I am with Virgin which I think is through the RBS! If you are planning on using any forum classifieds it is essential to have online banking for BT payments IMO so easy to do from the comfort of your chair. Alternative is phone, I did it by phone a couple of weeks ago, broadband was down, the receiver had the payment in 25 minutes.

For ebay I insist on paypal from only confirmed addresses, cheque or PO goods sent when fully cleared, you know you have the money before sending the goods. For purchases I will only deal with 100% feedback members and only pay with paypal.

The forums are a bit different especialy specialist ones like this and AVForum, another of my hobbies! You tend to have honest like minded people, you can rely on a persons description of an item and trust them etc.

However you must still be vigilant, if it is such a bargain that it is too good to be true then it generally is!!!:suspect:

Sorry for waffling.

Kev

If you do a bank transfer to a an account at a different branch of the same bank it is instant.
