Just curious really....wondered if anyone knew where I stood on this?
A Direct Debit is due to go out of my wife's account today....

So I travel to the bank to put the money in to cover it and the branch is closed until tomorrow morning (handwritten notice so likely due to the snow).

Naturally it's going to either bounce (=charge) or be paid and go over the overdraft limit (=charge).
Not able to make it to another branch due to time and weather, so what am I supposed to do? Are they likely to waive the charge? Should they?

I'd certainly ask them to waiver any charge - don't suppose you have a picture of the sign in daylight to back it up.

I think it might turn out to be one of those unfortunate circumstances you cannot avoid :(

Do they not have a Customer Service Phoneline you can ring? They might be able to extend your overdraft to accommodate?

That's unfortunate :(

The missus works in a bank, she says you'd have to contact them by telephone banking or transfer it online. If you're with the same bank it should be instant.

Just rang them and they said to try ringing tomorrow, and they will ring the branch...It's down to the branch whether to charge or something (it's my wife's account so they wouldn't speak to me)
I'm not with the same bank so it would take at least 3 days.......Just checked online and the DD has already gone out....and the charge is on the account....will try and get it waived tomorrow.

He did say if we get it in before 3:30 tomorrow we wouldn't be charged......but we can't get there before 3:30 I don't think.

Banks are friendly if you talk to them.

When you shout they are not friends.

I agree that generally only branches can stop charges and in this circumstance I bet they will waiver the charge and be most apologetic too.

Explain the situation - for most banks, the call centre can take care of this so I suspect you talked to someone who was just taking the mick earlier.

Do you have access to online or telephone banking? The Faster Payments system was introduced recently and most payments will go through almost immediately. If I do a payment from my (Natwest) account online, it appears in OH's (HBOS) a/c within 2 or 3 minutes.

In any case, make a note of the time and who you spoke to - if they don't give full name, ask which team they work for and where they are based (just in case).

Most bank charges are dealt with by the branch as they are classed as a branch cost. Or they were when I worked there...that was before the government bought it anyhow....On accounts, not Credit cards, the charges can only be reversed at the holding branch. If a customer of our branch, whose accounts were held at another branch for some reason, came in and asked to refund we would have to call that branch.

All refunds have to be justified and signed off in the system....just the archaic way the banks work in the UK....they are 20 years behind with their technology!

bank transfer, its the way forward
