Good afternoon,

Quick question, but how much hosting space in terms of bandwidth and storage space would I need if I was to use Wordpress for a small website with a gallery selling my services and a blog that would be updated daily with news and views with pics?

The idea is that I would increase traffic flow once I put work on both the website and the blog (and increase my SEO for my services).

What packages do you guys generally go for?

I’d be keen to avoid the free websites like clickpic as I’d need to buy hosting for my blog anyway and I may as well put my main site on there too rather than pay for two separate services.

many thanks

ill check them out, thanks :)

any other suggestions?

Comparing the 2, tso host appear to be cheaper in terms of cost/disk space and bandwidth.... hmm!

Kuallo are good, so are Rackspace. You don't need a VPS or a Dedicated Server. Shared hosting aught to be fine for now. My site is hosted on a £9.98 a month hosting package and runs pretty quickly. If you notice you're site getting more traffic and response times begin to slow it could be that you need to upgrade but make sure that it's required. Sometimes servers can run slow temporarily and may not be a sign that you need to upgrade. If it happens regularly then upgrade.

I use Krystal.co.uk now... Cheapest hosting I've found and you get pretty much all you will need even on their most basic Amethyst package.

tsohost here too

The devil is in the detail. One persons small gallery is another persons huge gallery

Most shared hosting packages are going to be fine. For ease, you might want one which allows multiple databases

One of my sites, with a blog, and a photography gallery uses up about a gig of space, and about 800 MB bandwidth a month

My wifes wordpress blog last month used 136m bandwidth a month, and 36 mb of storage

Essentially, what ever you chose, make sure that if it is limited in any way, that the transition to the bigger account is painless and reasonably priced

Good advice thanks guys. How large is your photogallery? I suspect that once I compress them down I suppose I wouldn't have a massive gallery although my blog will be updated more frequently and so would require more space. I hope 500mb of space of 5gb of bandwidth will be enough. I'm certain on the bandwidth, not the space though....

many many 1000's of images, at 700 pixels wide on longest edge + thumbnails

I have just over 8GB's worth of pics in my online gallery.

im currently up to 3,884 images in my photocart gallery, sized to 600x400 and im using 697MB in total including the rest of the website. in april i had 1.81GB worth of bandwidth through the site.

if that helps in any way lol

and rapidly growing, its been fairly quiet over the last few months but event bookings have just exploded so im expecting to have to upgrade again before the year is out.

maybe start on the base package of whichever hosting company you chose and religiously keep an eye on the usage stats..

Thats a great point. Nothing is worse than a host pulling a site when it gets busy - usually at the moment when you start making it

Good idea Neil. I've gone with TSO Host on their 14.99 for the year - bargain!

Gone with a paid wordpress template which is pretty clean minimalist and clean and more importantly, looks professional and I’m going to get one of the wordpress blogs to interlink the two. Also registered my domain name.

Now for the very difficult part, in that I need to upload the site to the host, start modifying the site and uploading my images using FTP….which I’ve never done before. :S

woooo :) you wont regret it, the guys at TSOHost are excellent and really helpful.

the ftp bit is easy, once youve got your pages set out connect using the details they give you and dump it all into the WWW or PUBLIC_HTML folder.. but shout if you get stuck :)
