Band Photography

Hi All,

Just needing a little advice.

I'm going to shot a band and just looking for some tips. The Band will be in a practise studio so unsure of the lighting etc

I'll be shooting in RAW so I can "correct" any slight issue with exposure etc.

Any advice would be great and I thank you in advance.

50mm 1.8? dont fall over any cables. yes , i have.
flash if you need it. practice studios are usualy fairly well lit, but cluttered.
wide apetures for shallow depth of field?
have a good chat with em beforehand if poss and find out what theyre about , and what they want from the photos.you,ll prob not be able to get shots off the whole band as a group, but will get close enough to get good individual shots.
if theyre in a band , they WILL perform for the camera.
and dont forget to enjoy yourself.

Some practise studios are very small, so wide angle needed, which can lead to interesting distortions Others are larger, so easier in that respect. Lighting varies....from totally artificial strip lights only to bare windows and bare bulbs....and allsorts in between! Have an off camera flash if you can....popups just not flexible enough.....and if there is room, and you have access, then softboxes etc. etc.

agree with photo star. ive only done a couple for mates. practice rooms are often small, but ive done em with a 50mm , and theyve been ok.i used flash and a diffuser for one bounced off a (white) ceiling.

Thanks for the advice I've only got a 14 - 42 or 14 - 45 lens to use (my 40 - 150 would be too large maybe?)

I've got a old Flash gun that I use off the Camera Manually.

Is there anyway I can diffuse the on board camera flash? What settings should I use the on board flash or do I just not use it at all?

why not ask the band if they can show you the rehearsal room in advance?

i've been in many rehersal rooms - and they've all been very different from each other

Well I'm gonna have a look up tonight for an hour, take a few test shots and then return the following week for real shots.

I'll have the ability to use my old flash gun remotely as my wireless hot shoe will have turned up by then
