righty, nearly there, Almost all set for my travels round central and south America,

Got the gear sorted, got the laptop/netbook sorted (just need to buy it), Got the confirm that you can burn disks in the internet cafes, so that's the backup sorted, got the tickets.

Now I just need a bag. ( I have a crumpler shoulder bag at the moment but don't think this will work with a rucksack on my back as well)

Been looking at a few models / makes etc. I think a rucksack is best but needs to be small enough to carry on my front (or in my hand by its top strap). My main backpack will have all my clothes etc in it, and get chucked about, go in the hold and chucked on top of buses etc I just need something to carry my gear. Needs to be small enough to class as hand luggage and carry on buses with me, but big enough to hold the main components which are

40D
Canon 24-70L
Canon 70-300 IS
Sigma 10-20
netbook / laptop
Possibly the 400D as well (backup!)
Plus a couple of bits and bobs (teleconverter, Gorillapod etc)

All the rest of my gear can go in the main rucksack until I need it. things like the nifty 50, 430 ex, card reader, power cables etc (anything that's not too crucial and can be replaced at smaller cost)

Looking at the models out there what would you recommend?

I like the look of the packs that have a room for other stuff as well, so that if we were trekking for a day I could leave my main rucksack at the room and take a selection of gear plus water proofs, water, food etc.

My only concern is that with these types of bag all the camera gear is at the bottom, which is the bit that hits the ground first when putting your bag down.

Budget isnt too much of a problem and would rather pick one up second hand as its been broken in and doesnt look all new and shiny.

Thanks all
Greg

What about one of the smaller Tamrac expedition bags? You'll fit that lot in there easy enough I'd think.

I have a Lowepro Fastpack 350 and it's superb. Meets all your listed requirements.

I have two Lowe Pro bags... the most useful of which unhelpfully for you im not sure they produce any more...

The one I have which might suit you which they still porduce is the Orion AW.

In terms of build quality Lowepro in my experiance cant be beaten.

One of my packs is 8 years old been to Peru, Denmark, Austria, Switzerland, USA 4 times, South Africa, numerous UK weekends away... And its still holding up well... no visible signs of damage bar a few scuffs and discolouration.

Just had a look on the lowe web site... the other pack I have is the Orion Treker... was not called that when I bought it... fab pack...

one thing I noticed you dont seem to have on your list is a tripod? I think you might regret not having one... even if only for night shots!
