Right after much pondering I'm about the pull the trigger on a Sigma 150-500mm lens, but I've decided I'll need a different bag for while I'm out and about.

I'm not a gym type so I tend to keep a bit of fitness by hitting some of the local walks regularly and I don't tend to take much gear with me, one or two lenses and my D7000. Now 150-500mm Sigma looks a pretty long beast so I'm wondering if people have any recommendation for a bag for light hiking.

I've been thinking along the lines of Lowepro Toploader Pro 75 AW which may be a tight fit, or trying to get something longer like the Digital Holster™ 50 V2.0.

Any other idea's don't want anything too massive?

What about a messenger style bag, would probably be more comfortable on a long walk and offer a bit of space for other bits and pieces as well.

Something like Lowepro Messenger bag
 
Messenger bags are rubbish for walking, especially with heavy kit, all of the wight is on one shoulder, when ideally it should be evenly spread out with a waist belt too.

My bag advice for serious outdoor use is always FStop gear.

I'm presuming that would just be in your opinion?

I've carried a messenger bag with a laptop, 2 bodies and 4 lenses all day without any discomfit. As long a it's worn over the head (and not just slung on one shoulder) and has a wide strap and comfortable padding on the strap where it sits on top of the shoulder it is quite comfortable.
 
I had a Tamrac Ultra Pro 13, very full with 2 bodies, one with a 100-400 L and the other a 24-105 f4 L, 4 other lenses, 3 flashguns and a 17" laptop + loads of odd bits and bobs. I got a luggage trolley with 6" wheels to take it on long journeys but most of the time it was draped down my right side and over my left shoulder and it was perfectly comfortable. Tamrac do a large range of shoulder bags and rucksacks as well and well worth a look.

Yes, in my experience I have found messenger bags to be rubbish for walking. Wearing the back as mentioned in your post my shoulder aches the next day after a short walk, much longer walks with more kit in a rucksack I am fine.

Rucksack with waist and chest straps would be best for walking, totally agree about not having weight lopsided. Find the Flipside 400 is fine for me and doesn't feel too weighty even when fairly well loaded up



I would also like a body for walking please, one I have got seems very reluctant at times lately :)
 
I have a Sigma 150-500 mounted on my D300 that I use 99% of the time.

I just use a normal rucksack with a bit of furniture foam stuck inside in the shape of the lens. The camera with lens attached sits pointing downwards on one half, leaving the other half of the bag to house beanbag/flask/other lenses etc.

When I'm on my bike I use something similar to this.

Although mines Adidas and I paid about £15 for it. It acts like one of the Lowepro Slingshots, but it only holds Sigma lens and camera.
