Yes
Have used Windows 8 a couple of times during the beta and I'm sure there was supposed to be a time machine type backup in the release version - did it ever make it in? Has anyone with windows 8 used it?

I have Windows 7 and have the following drives which I am currently backing up using a number of SyncToy2 routines of specific files and folders..

128Gb SSD (internal C) - has my docs, dropbox files, iTunes etc
500Gb SATA (internal D) - has my pics and my vids
1Tb SATA (internal E) - backup drive
1Tb USB2 (external F) - backup drive
Dropbox Pro 100gb cloud storage

SyncToy does the following schedules - C to E, then D to E every 2 hours, then C to F and D to F every alternating 2 hours. Dropbox is syncing in realtime if anything changes (not pics or vids). Finally I take an adhoc (when I remember) manual backup of important stuff on a portable USB drive that lives off site.

I am getting some errors in the sync toy logs and besides that, this whole thing seems like a bit of a faff.

Finally, due to me setting SyncToy to 'synchronise' mode, I am also concerned that unless I detect an error or that I have deleted a file by mistake, I only have a very limited window before the issue is replicated to the other locations.

How would a time machine deal with this?

Thanks

No idea about Time machine but sync mode in Synctoy seems a bit risky.

There are two other modes one of which just adds files to the backup with no deletions.

I will be investigating amazon glacier for my backup needs, rather cheap and I believe automated.

You can get has drives with backup software that will back up whole computers for you.

Windows 8 backs up settings etc. to the web, but it does not backup your files I believe.

The trouble with no deletions I suppose is that the backup will get bigger and bigger and....

Hmmm, not what I thought it would do then

You could always use the robocopy command and run it as a scheduled tasks,it makes the contents of the target the same as the source. I believe sync toy is based on Xcopy which robocopy has replaced. I used robocopy to copy photos and iTunes media. Use the /Mir switch with robocopy.
