Sort of following on from my MAC or PC? thread

At the moment I "backup" purely by saving to an external HD but ideally would like to do proper backups. I've had a quick scout round the internet and come across Genie and Acronis which both seem to have pretty good reviews.

Can anyone recomend these or some other easy to use backup software?

What's wrong with backing up to an external HDD? I use something called Memeo which came as a trial with my Buffalo USB drive. It grabs anything being saved to the other usb drive and keeps a copy.

The good thing is I don't need to worry about doing regular backups, any file changed is immediately copied.

I appreciate that this won't save me if the house burns down, so critical stuff is also stored on other PCs away from the house, but basic backups all go on the usb drives.

On the PC I use Microsoft Synctoy 2 (run it from task scheduler every night) to an external drive. I only back up my image, doc's and music directorys to an external 1TB drive. its quick and effective.

I also use the same program to back up to my FTP server once a week.

It works for me ;)

oh and it was free from Microsoft's site :)

I've used Acronis for a few years now - just a totally fantastic piece of software; can't say any more than that. Remember and make a recovery CD or USB pen from it as it's invaluable, especially if you don't have the recovery manager enable on boot (which you should have, of course).

allway sync. like ms synctoy but a better interface (my opinion).

I use Allway Sync as well, and it's excellent, but remember it's data backup only, you can't do bootable partitions, etc.

I know the Lacie drives come with a back-up application but I've never set mine up for my D2s, preferring to do it manually. Maybe I should automate it...

If you're anything like me, I'm paranoid about the automation not actually automating... if you know what I mean.... :D

IF you go for the Mac, you'll get TimeMachine included. Turn it on, point it at a drive to back up to and never have to worry about it again, until the drive fills up.

Then you just need to start worrying about how to back up your TimeMachine drive in case the house burns down etc... ;)

Acrionis is very good, for backups or imaging/cloning your os and it's quite intuative. Also so many people use it that if you have a problem there's someone on most forums that has the answer

PC - MS Synctoy (can be automated)
Mac - Timemachine, very automated
Both - Mozy - off site back up, last resort if my house burns down type thing...

@SpecialMan - I found the Lacie application annoying, as it wouldn't let me sync between Time Capsule and Lacie drive, only lets you sync to Lacie drives, unless you fork out for a more expensive version. I managed to write something in automator though that does what I want.

Off site I use these chaps www.mozy.com 26Gb and counting. On site stuff just gets copied between computers.
