Yes
I all I had a lowepro AW 302 slingshot but didn't get on with it so I sold it and bought a Manfrotto unica stile vII. Good bag but only for when I'm walking, and I hate the compartment at the very bottom. I take my dslr when out biking and it goes in my normal backpack in a wooly hat amongst other things and the problem I have with dedicated Dslr backpacks is that they are all about compartments for lenses/flashes and naff all else, basically I'm after a backpack that has a small padded compartment at the top for a camera and on a seperate zip for the othe compartment which wold be bigger than the top and filled with food etc etc.. Am I asking for too much? Does anything like this even exist? Thank u in advance for all ur comments.. Billy

a bit more expensive than i had in mind but thank you.

I just use a normal jessops dslr bag and pop it into my rucksack. It only holds one lens on the camera though.

The tamrac adventure series look roughly what you want too:

http://www.tamrac.com/5547.htm

If I want more than one lens then my tamrac has loads of pockets and several areas I can stow butties and such like.

not much just the camera and one lens.

I have exactly the same problem and have never really found a solution beyond the camera in a hat one that you use.

What I really want is a decent sized day pack that has say a third of it's capacity dedicated to camera stuff and the rest as space for my lunch and water proof. the trouble with dedicated camera bags is they are always the other way round or worse and if you buy the bigger bag from the range then they increase the camera storage not the other stuff bit!

I sense a marketing oppertunity for someone?

How about stowing a lowepro aw200 inside the rucksack?? That's large enough for body & 2 lenses. It leaves all the rest of the space for other things.

Backpacks come in two basic types, either all camera gear in one big compartment, or those that are split in two with kit in the bottom and a general storage area in the top. Loads of variations on these themes from Lowepro, Tamrac, Kata, Crumpler, Vanguard, Think Tank etc etc.

There are a few different options though, and one that might suit you is the Lowepro CompuDay Photo 250, and only £50. It's a general workaday bag for general items and a laptop, with just one side-access pocket specifically for a camera and lens. I have a Kata 466i which has a personal compartment at the top and a laptop compartment. You can also take the camera compartment out to use all the space like a normal backpack.

Im not sure, but don't crumpler do an insert for bags? Basically just the padding from one of their small bags.

Thank u all for ur comments some of the suggestions look promising, although still looking.

I've been searching for the same elusive bag and have come to the conclusion that it doesn't actually exist. I want one to use on a daily basis for work but I always take a camera with me. I've got a Kata 467i which is almost right but the ratio is still geared too much on the camera side. I have got the old Crumpler Nikon branded bag which has the removable insert but if I use it in a normal rucksack it has to sit at the bottom of the bag and then all the other gear goes on top. I've had a couple of other Crumplers which again are almost right but they lacked external pockets and places for water bottles.

It's a never ending search, I may just design one myself and get it made up.

I'd try emailing the bag makers and asking them why they don't make what you want. If a lot of people also email and ask for the same thing they might come up with something.

Most bags have removable and movable inserts so it must be possible to jiggle the inside space to be how you want it.

Lol last night I got my drawing pad out and did a couple of sketches just incase, I think I'm gonna head out to tk-max, Argos, and where ever else they sell a lot of backpacks and try to find one that I can modify,my wife's sawing machine might have to be dusted off as there'll be a lot of chopping and changing. I say tk-max as they sell a lot of odd backpacks in there and they do a lot of swissgear ones so they'll have a lot of external pockets. I'll keep the thread updated once I've found the right candidate.

Lowepro has a few decent ones if you're just looking to fit just one body and lens; the Photo Sport, Compu Daypack, Photo hatchback. Also try Clik Elite.

You can to a certain extent but I want to be able to keep the camera gear seperate from my waterproof jacket, sandwiches and drink!

Red Snapper do a few packs that may be worth looking at -

I use this one from 7dayshop -

http://www.7dayshop.com/hama-track-pack-190-camera-bag-backpack-rucksack-ref-103705?q=rucksack&sl=sl

It holds

the camera and kit lens,
a 50mm lens,
a 70-210mm lens,
spare battery and charger,
phone charger,
rocket blower,
lens cloth,
a few filters,
the camera manual,
a pair of 10x50 binoculars, and
when I need it, a 1 litre water bottle.

The above fills the sack but all of the dividers come out so you may be able to use a few to hold the photo gear and leave a fair bit of space for other things.

They don't exist, even the very expensive F Stop or Clik Elite backpacks aren't that great for what they costs. After some investigation I've made my own and find it excellent...

I use a dedicated hiking backback which has a brilliant harness system but also a side access panel...

In the side access panel I use a dedicated camera insert like this one...

best solution I've found by far...works great for day hikes etc with or without camera gear

Thank you, I'm thinking of doing the same.

Out of interest, what's wrong with the Lowepro CompuDay Photo 250 linked in post #11? Seems to be just what you're after from the OP?

Funnily enough this is the only photo backpack I own, it's great for "city days" and I really like the quick access side panel...it's not suitable for "activity" use though, harness system isn't great and the backpack itself is quite small

It looks a lil bit small and not sure about the inside set-up although I'm not ruling it out I will have a proper look in the shop to see if I would be happy with it.
