Backing up Images .... After PP.

Morning all, after having a few issues with my laptop I want to understand what I'm actually saving when I back up the images.

Right my normal process is to move them from memory card to my folder on the laptop then open the images in Adobe Bridge edit them in RAW editor then save the ones I need to share as JPEG so then I've got 2 copy's of some of my images the RAW file and JPEG file.

Here's my question...... obviously the JPEG files are fine as they've been compressed with all the changes but the RAW file if I back that up will it save the changes I made to them in the RAW editor or are they saved somewhere / somehow different.

the raw will be unedited and unchanged in there raw format. i would suggest when you save them after editing to also save the edited ones as TIFF. this way you have an edited copy that doesnt suffer from compression loss as jpegs do.
save these "worked on" tiff files to a different location ( external drive, NAS box, cloud ) , and also i would save your RAW files elsewhere as well , so you end up with 2 copies of RAW ( one on laptop one external, one copy of JPEG and once copied of the tiff file.
Backups and storage are dirt cheap. images are irreplaceable once gone.

Depending on your editor, you'll either create a sidecar file (*.xmp) with the edits to your RAW file in, (this is what bridge does) or a database catalogue of changes. Back these files up as well as your raws and any edits you make will also be backed up

Bridge stores xmp sidecar files. As long as you back those up, you will be fine and do not need to create TIFFs. boyfalldown is right.
 
If your imagesbare all in 1 master folder and you don't use LR, just backup that entire folder. If you use LR you will need to backupnthe library too. The location can be found in LR preferences.
For additional information, I have par4itioned my drive into 3, system drive, data & pagefile. This allows a system restore or reinstallation without affecting your data. Having Pagefile on its own minimises fragmentation of your hdd and it appears to be a little faster.
