hello,

i see all these really nice backgrounds, both black and white, and i just wandered what exactly they were? is there a cheap way to make the same effect? the only way i have been able to create the same effect is by changing the colour settings on my imaging program [photoplus] but then sometimes the actual subject is too dark to manipulate it. any help would be much aprieciated

Hi Violet,

Welcome to the forum. I use a white plate for small objects, and angle the camera to make sure you can't see past the plate. I have some cheap desk lampts too to get it really nice and bright!!! A complete hack but I like it :)

I know some people use sheets, towels, and proper equipment too from tog shops...

Hi violet welcome to the forums.

i use some blackout lining from a fabric shop, fairly cheap and quite thick, ive got white and dark grey, if i dont put a light ont he backdrop it appears black.

Hi Violet and welcome :)

Black is easier to achieve because black is caused by the absence of light (as far as the camera is concerned). The white backgrounds are sometimes done by directing studio lights at the background so the camera reads it as really white. It depends on the size of the object you are photographing. Small objects are often easier as Gary's plate setup proves, people are a bit harder!

All sorts of materials can be used, I saw a cracking flower pic here recently that was a white flower shot against black plastic. I once used a black jacket hung over a chair with the subject on the chair.

*Warning: maximum cheapness*

Get a large cardboard box and cut two joining sides out of it, then line the box with thick white or black paper stuck down with double sided tape or just loop some normal cheap tape so that it has two sticky sides.

Then use whatever light source you have, setting your white balance to compensate.

This is what i use for my Ebay photos and it works very well if you have space the bigger the box the better. :thumbs:
