Hi all, I'm after some advice on setting up some kind of BG for my portrait work - I currently just use a black bed sheet pegged to my bay window curtain rail, but its getting pretty limiting. I guess where working space is concerned I have about 150cm x 250cm to fit the BG

I was thinking of getting one of those collapsible backgrounds with some kind of mottled pattern on, but I find those pretty pricey and a little stylized (think business head shots) I could always get a white one, but still, pretty pricey at around £120.

My other option is get some kind of background stand set up and hang a seamless paper roll off it or something similar, I don't think me and Mulslin would get on

I'm thinking a simple white paper roll - I don't do hi-key bg's as I find them pretty boring, therefor I'll be working to make it Grey with varying effects, could always stick some gels on my flash etc...

Could anyone recommend some brands/kits that are pretty much cheap, cheap, but wont fall apart and brutally harm my models  :bat:

Cheers - Rob

Rob, go for a chroma Green or Blue and make you own digital bgs in PS4.

If you need any bg's I could mail you some. If I remeber... so busy i forget what day it is.

I never thought of that... Is it fairly simple to do and effective? I'm no stranger to CS4 but when it comes to cutting people out and changing BG's it tends to no look so great.

Get down to your local market like i did yesterday and got myself 1600mm x 4mtrs of black velvet for £12 .

Ray.

*blush* why do green/blue backgrounds work better than others for cutting and pasting onto a digital background?

Collapsable backgrounds are a fair bit cheaper in warehouse express btw, cheapest that I could find them TBH

I'm guessing there is some option in CS4 that will just replace those colours with the desired BG. Much like when they shoot films in a big green room then CGI everything in :)

I already have black covered as I said, plus velvet/muslin - not for me, especially when trying to light a BG, in limited space. Cheers for the suggestion however :)

I'm actually more after suggestions for the stands if anyone's got any suggestions for those? best I can find is about £90 for an Interfit set up that's adjustable.

Most of the chroma BG are colours that you are not likely to have in your foreground and also not got any skin colours in
In CS4 you can change any colour but having a colour way away for any in shot make life easer.
You can make selections based on colour for a mask and fine tune it so you can have any background you wish.

If you're not after portability I read somewhere a suggestion to mount plastic plumbing pipes in large flowerpots filled with concrete and use right angle joints to fit a pipe crossbar to hold the paper roll.

Now that's cheap:lol:

LOL - I'm sure I can scrape a little change together and splash out on something a little more luxurious  I dont want to bring a model home and have to explain why I have the foundations of a gazebo in my front room :bonk:
