I recently got married and have a lovely picture of myself and hubbie, however I am not sure on the background. Is there anyway of taking us out and putting us in a photo with a nicer background of the hotel without making it look fake? Or can anyone do this?

Post them up, im sure someone will do it for you, if they havent by weekend ill do it for you

Not really a great idea if they don't own the copyright or have a licence covering editing, is it!
 
Copyright doesn't prevent anyone from editing your images. Besides... it's just for their own personal use.. who cares?

Anyway.... no, you can't just put people into any other photograph without it looking fake. Lighting has to match on both, as does angle of taking etc. It's possible. We'd need to see the image.

Who cares? I do and as a professional photographer so should you!



.....whoops I forgot. You don't give two figs for the value of other people's copyright, do you?

Hi and welcome to TP. We are quite friendly here, honest.

The correct answers are mentioned here however, it depends on the image and the lighting so that it doesn't look fake, but if you put up a small image/images you should get a few opinions as to what can be done. What was your deal with the photographer, Do you have full res images and full rights to them as obviously that is a consideration.

You miss my point. Once a private client buys a photo from you... what I mean is... there's nothing on earth you can do to stop them doing whatever they want with it. How will you ever know?

As a professional photographer, I couldn't care less. You've obviously never done much commercial work :) By the time the company's art dept. have finished ruining your image, you want to cry. You could quote the copyright act like an arse if you want, but you'd not get any more work from that client.... photographers are ten a penny. You'd just be cutting yourself off from work on a principle for the sake of it.

So long as you aren't editing it then putting it on Facebook, or online, and it's just to sit on your office desk etc, then who honestly cares.

OP.. post up a small version of the original pic, and a pic of the background you'd LIKE in there and we'll tell you if it will work or not.

To the OP - have you asked your original photographer if he/she can do it, or if indeed it's doable? Also, in reference to the above points raised, was the picture taken by a professional or by a guest with a camera? Copyright still technically applies in both cases, but your friend might be more willing to have someone else mess with their photos than a paid photographer. However, as already mentioned, whilst it is often 'easy' to do, getting it to look real can be a whole different ball game. :)
 
OP, ask for the thread to be moved to the Post Processing and Image Editing forum and post the photo. Folk generally just edit stuff for you there without the ridiculous arguing.

I agree with the highlighted point. If what you are doing is never going to leave your home, I don't see a problem with what is being suggested here - to an extent anyway. However, you are encouraging someone to post a photo on this forum for editing that they may not hold the rights to, whihch runs against what you've said in your first instance.

As for my problem with you... as long as you flout copyright regs by doing exactly what you've suggested not to do above (ie publish work on a forum that you don't hold a licence for) then I'll criticise you for it.

Copyright is a fundamental tenet of professional photography. I'm sorry if you don't like that minor inconvenience!




However, to address the original point, I agree with both Pookey and Yv. You can mash a photo and swap the background out, but without careful editing it's going to look like exactly what it is- an edited photo.

Having said that, if you do have rights to the photo by all means post it and let the guys here have a shot at it.

Sorry... you'll have to explain that one to me. I have no recollection of posting anything on TP that I have no legal right to.
 
It seems this is a spirit vs letter of the law debate. Pookeyhead seems to be, sensibly in my view, arguing that the OP's request doesn't violate the spirit of the law (though it may violate the letter of the law) and is therefore inconsequential.

For example, where I live, bylaws make drinking in the street illegal. But if you're enjoying, say, a cup of mulled wine while watching the fireworks on a November night nobody, including the police, is likely to bother their backsides about it because that's not the kind of behaviour the law is supposed to prevent. This kind of discretion is wholly sensible.

But then there are those neighbors, while wearing a look on their faces like you are rolling up your shirt and are about to spike a vein, who would make it their mission to loudly and aggressively express that your mug of mulled wine is illegal and should be disposed of in the grass immediately because that kind of behavior will no doubt attract louts wearing hoodies and god knows what other riff raff. :)
