Hi

Got myself some lights and want to start making the most of them, At the moment I am using a bed sheet hung from the curtain pole at the moment but would like to get a better set up, I was thinking of a set of stands and a backdrop to go with it.

Could you recomend me some I will have around £150 for stands and a backdrop of some description.

Thanks

I got myself the Lencarta background stand, and would highly recommend it, at around half your budget, leaving plenty for paper/vinyl/bedsheets, or whatever suits.

Ok got a good deal on a stand set up, 3m wide etc etc, so what is the better backdrop, alot of people use white but when would a black backdrop be used???

1. When you want a black backdrop, to add drama, to separate the subject from the background with rimlighting or backlighting.
2. When you don't want your shot ruined by unwanted light reflected from the white backdrop
3. When you don't have enough space to light a white backdrop well

Both white and black backgrounds have the same problem - they lack depth, so the subject looks as if they're stuck onto the background. That's one of the reasons why people use natural backgrounds, grey backgrounds etc that are lit unevenly.

Thanks for that Gary, would I be better getting something with colour in it then like the mottled effect ones I have been looking at??
I am quite limited for space and just learning all about studio lighting too so this might be the better option to learn with??

Thanks

Mottled backgrounds are all about personal taste. Personally I prefer plain colours such as grey. Or, where there is enough space, unlit white, which can end up anywhere from slightly grey to almost black, depending on space/lighting/lack of lighting

Ah right ok see what your saying now., I did use a white bed sheet taped to the curtain pole with my two flash guns to start with and got some half decent results, now i have proper lights Just wanted a proer background.

Going to buy the stands and a black and white background as they are reletivley cheap then if i decide i could go with colours if it suited my needs better.
Thanks for the advice Gary, Much appreciated
