I’m in the process of building my own studio.
I would like some help in where I can obtain some Photographic backgrounds / backdrops, can any one recommend an online shop.

Also as I am starting from scratch I would like to place some wiring in so I can introduce some ceiling lighting any ideas of what kind of lighting would be appropriate for the ceiling.

Thanks.

Sorry Rocket but I'm a bit confused by your question.

The photographic backgrounds are easy, google chromakey, lastolite or Calumet and take your pick. Or look for the same things in ebay and you will find plently of sellers.

It's the ceiling that has me confused..........why would you want a light on the ceiling and what do you want it to do?

I wouldn't, halogen causes some nasty colour balance problems and mixed with other kinds of lighting would cause chaos.

Or turn them off when you want to take pics!

i would use some halogen ceilling lights, that you sink in the ceiling

As general background lighting or to light the subject I'm guessing is what's confused AliB - and I

If it's background lighting, just don't use huge wattage - if it's to act as a Key light, then you're going to need a rack set on the ceiling which will cost a fortune and mean you can only photograph very short people

thats what i was thinking as if he has studio light that would be ok surely but you wouldnt want them on all the time

I keep my all 20 of my strip lights on all the time in my studio

What does that tell you ???

Thanks for the reply.
My question was placed as i have found personal recommendation goes a long way, buying from ebay always raises concerns...I will check out your google recommendations

As i am to plasterboard the ceiling a want to place wiring for lighting that could or maybe needed for down lighting rather than face on, of course i am not sure if this is a viable move and wanted to know if these is a correct method, i really don't want to put the ceiling up and find that should have put some wiring/lighting in place....

Thanks for the replies, i see i could have confused from the original subject, I wanted to know if there is a good way of lighting the subject, rather than just lighting the room, perhaps lighting the subject via strip tubing or such like from above would be less shadow, also perhaps spot lighting to drop down onto the subject ( does that make sense)?, i wondered if there somthing on the market that is apropriate.

regards

Lighting in one place is rarely a good idea - light the room to be 'light' and airy - and leave the photo lighting to the studio lights

However light a room seems to you - if you shoot it at f8, ISO 100 and 1/250th then you'll probably find sod-all records - hence your ambient lighting will have little effect and all real lighting is from your studio lights

So light your room to create the right ambience, but don't think it'll have ANY effect on your studio lighting

WOW lol ill shut up then i didnt think that would be visable for cost thats all

Eh?

My point was that even having 20 strips lights make NO difference to the studio lighting - it allows me to see the people I'm shooting but nothing else

Perhaps I missed your point ???

OK DD that makes sense, its studio lighting for photographying , i thought i might be helping myself, for later developments, there is no way i want to confuse myself any more, so i will just use some normal lighting for seeing my way around..

thanks...

Maybe Rocket was talking about lighting to whiten the background?
In that case, it's perfectly plausible to have a couple of studio lights hitting your background from the ceiling.

That's why I was confused!

Certainly use halogen lights on the ceiling as room lights but not for lighting your subject. That's the job of the studio lights (flash heads) and their position and power contribute to that.

Mixing and matching light sources is not something I'd really recommend. :)

I bought a backdrop set (stands + 4 backdrops + 4 texturedythin muslin sheets) off ebay, perfectly happy with the quality.

I would however suggest that you get full 3x6m backgrounds rather than just square ones, as you WILL want the full length ones.

as for connections to the ceiling, if you run a mains cable so that there's a power socket up there, it will mean that if you do ever want to put a couple of studio heads on vertical scissor brackets, say for lighting the backdrop, you can run the power easily. probably not the most essential thing to do though tbh.
