Are they all much of a muchness?

Just found one for about £50 which seems quite cheap. It was quite sturdy from what I could tell and came with a carry case.

Unknown brand made in China.....

Sorry, but totally unsuitable, not long enough, not stable enough, won't take the weight.

Back to the orginal question, IMO it's worth paying more for something that will last for more than 5 minutes and that will safely take the weight. A lot of these Ebay cheapies are only designed to be used with "non woven fabric" which weighs virtually nothing because it's crap - if you're planning to use paper or, even worse, vinyl, then you need a very rigid structure.

Cheap sturdy background stands? PA stands are £ for £ better than photography stands, built to hold more weight, air damped. Bargain.
